My first PM 2 but is it real or fake?

A place to list and reference all Spyderco counterfeits, clones, and replicas that are found. Anything that isn't a legitimate Spyderco fits in this area.

My first PM 2 but is it real or fake?

#1

Post by Senfkarte »

Hi,
I need your help with my (hopefully) Spyderco PM 2. I'm not sure if the knife in question is legit or fake, because I only have a few YouToube videos and some posts on forums as a source. I know, only sending the knife to Spyderco will give a 100% result but I live in Germany and the shipping would not be cheap.
My clues, that make me think the knife could be fake are purely based on (sometimes) old information I found online:

- The barcode on the box dosn't touch the numbers
- The foam inside the box isn't undersized
- The foam in the box is quite transparent
- The gray line on the box does not "shine" through the spyder

All that should be a giveaway for a fake box and a fake box is a clear hint for a fake knife.
On the knife itself I found far less clues that would lead to a fake but who would put a legit knife in a fake box?

- The lanyardhole is not as chamfered as I saw in videos

The rest of the knife seems fine for me (but: no experience with the PM 2). At least the points, that the fake vs real videos mentioned don't seem to be a problem. Maybe you can spot something fishy.
Here are the specs I measured in comparison to the specs Spyderco declares:
- Overall Length: 211mm (Spyderco: 211mm)
- Closed Length: 122.4mm (Spyderco: 122mm)
- Blade Thickness: 3.69mm (Spyderco: 3.7mm)
- Weight: 111.7g {3.94oz} [with clip] (Spyderco: 108g {3.8oz})

Any input is helpfull, so please let me know if you have spotted something that adds to my list of clues, or if you can disprove my points.

Here is the Spyderco side with all the specs and pictures:

And here are some pictures I have taken. I hope the way to show them is ok.

Hi,
I need your help with my (hopefully) Spyderco PM 2.
I have the same knife but from the seconds sale direct from Spyderco. Yours looks real from all the pictures. The lanyard tube looks like mine. Yours is even sharpened like mine where they didn't touch where a sharpening choil usually goes. The cutout for the compression lock looks good too it's usually sharper on most fakes. I haven't heard of any fake Maxamet knives yet.

Thanks for your time to take a look at the pictures, compare them with your knife and reply to my post, I really appreciate that.

At first, I only compared the knife with the videos and pictures I found online, and I was fairly certain that the knife is either real or a very good fake.
But then I checked the box, because many people talked about the boxes and that was the point I started to become a little suspicious because the box fulfills nearly every point that is supposedly a clear hint for a fake box. The only point that is missing are spelling errors. But there is a good chance that I just have not spotted them, if there are any. And I could not compare the box to other Spyderco boxes, because my last Spyderco I bought is a few years old, and I have to commit, I didn't keep the boxes anyway.

Looks real to me. I have a PM2 Maxamet and could not see any differences. I wouldn't worry about the box so much. I have boxes that look exactly like yours and were bought from 100% legit Spyderco dealers.

Thank you for your input as well. I appreciate that you took your time to compare my knife with your knife, as well as the box and responded to my post.

I'm sorry for my persistence with the box, although I already had confirmation for the knife but this is a expensive knife for me and I just wanted to be sure. I paid pretty much the price, that Spyderco itself has on its own website in euro. That is a lot of money, at least for me but this knife just looks so awensome in grey.
