Serial numbers

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever come across a fake with a serial number on the blade? I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that the first run of certain models had a serial number stamped on them, similar to the collectors club number. If someone happened to find one of these, is it authentic? Or is there still a chance that it's a fake?
