Not really "in" the forest this time. The road to Windy Ridge opened yesterday so I took a little road trip and a short hike. Windy Ridge is northeast of Mt. St Helens and on a clear day you can look strait into the crater and see the lava dome. Today was not so clear. :)

First a few shots of one of my favorites, the Caly 3.

A couple of shots on a log

The Indian Paintbrush flowers are blooming.
Image

Another one of my favorites.
Image

Image

A couple shots of the Kahr Delica.
Image

Image

For the best view of the mountain climb about 400 steps to the top of the hill at Windy Ridge. I didn't do it on this day because WINDY Ridge was living up to its name and clouds were blocking all of the great views.

Image

The Indian Paintbrush really stands out on the relatively baron landscape.

Image

The landslide that occurred when Mt. St. Helens blew in 1980 raised the surface of Spirit Lake about 200 feet. Boy's and Girl's scout camps that were once along the edge of the lake are now buried under earth and/or water.

Image

Image

It is amazing that after 35 years there are still so many logs floating on the surface of the lake.

Image

Here you can see trees that were knocked over in the blast lined up like matchsticks.

Image

One last shot of the deer that I was almost too slow to catch. There were actually 4 or 5 of them but they weren't interested in sticking around for a photo.

Nice pics. Interesting about the logs - on the lake and lined up.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Wow that is amazing! The aftermath of St. Helen's can still be seen today? You've really picked the coolest place in the country to live.

Bump in honor of Mt. St. Helens day. Just thought I would add a few old pics of the mountain since I couldn't get any new pics due to the weather lately.

And to keep this an official Spyderco post, here's a knife pic from late last fall. :D

Thanks John. I was planning on getting some more waterfall pics yesterday, but the drive to Burley took way longer than I expected. Maybe next time. :)

I haven't had the time to get out much lately and my camera is in need of repair, but I did go for a drive and a couple of short hikes today. The pics were all taken with my cell phone.

The only knife that I had with my today was this one.

I wasn't able to get out and wander very much this summer, but the wife and I did manage get out today and do a little foraging.

Over the river...
Image

and through the woods.
Image

With a few woodland creatures...
Image

and plenty of chanterelles.

Yes, the trees are changing and you can see some of them in my pictures from yesterday.

I spent 12 hours hiking around the woods yesterday on the hunt for a bull elk. It was more of a hike than a hunt but any excuse to wander about is a good excuse.

The beginning of our "hike". You can see some of that color in this pic.
Image

Here are a few scenic pics.

Hills for miles.
Image

A glimpse of Packwood Lake.
Image

And the knife of the day was...Black on Black PM2.
Image

There was an elk answering our bugle somewhere over near Bear Grass Butte. We also spotted a couple of mountain goats over there when we came back in the late afternoon.
Image

Forest critter.
Image

Another blurry knife pic.
Image

About seven hours into our hike we arrived at Lost Late.
Image

Image

Image

All of the dead snags along the top of this ridge are the result of a forest fire that occurred several years ago.
Image

One last shot of the PM2 hiding among the huckleberry bushes.
Image

It was about 12 hours from the time we left the truck and the time we got back to the truck. The elevation gain from our starting point to the highest point was about 2000 feet, but we traveled up and down several peaks. We didn't see a single elk, deer or bear and only encountered four other people at Lost Lake. My body reminded me that I am getting old and out of shape, but even though I could barely lift my legs at the end of the day, I had a great time. I also managed to come home with some treats.

Yum!

Went on a short hunt/hike yesterday. My hunting partner spotted a bull in this area a few days ago, but we didn't have much luck today.

Image

Scaly Vase Chanterelle.
Image

The terrain was steep...
Image

but there was plenty of elk sign.
Image

The sun is getting low...
Image

and even lower.
Image

No knife pics this time, sorry.

Sorry about all the lousy pics lately. I really need to get my good camera fixed but the cost is a little prohibitive right now.

My son and I went for a drive into the mountains today but I still don't have a good camera so I only took a few pics.

Waterfall.

Mt. Rainier

Here's my son playing in a "snow storm" and then enjoying a popsicle.

Image

I thought we might be in for a "Christmas Story" flagpole moment when he licked the chunk of snow but it wasn't quite cold enough. :D

I'll try to get out more and keep this thread going when my new camera gets here (hopefully next week). :spyder:
