Clear scales - Down Under!

Postby SpydieKnut » Mon Dec 30, 2013 6:33 am

I don't normally post much here, these were originally posted on ABF but Sal suggested I post on here too, hope you guys enjoy and let me know what you think?

It's quite amazing what you can achieve when you have a large CNC at you disposal, range of materials and a passion for Spydies!

The scales are machined from either acrylic (Perspex) or polycarb sheet. They need to be machined on both sides to rebate the liners then chemically polished. While I was at it, I did a few minor tweaks to the Endura - mainly removing the finger notches (it never sat quite rite in my hand) and made the jimping more aggressive.

Now that you can see the internal liners (as well as all the workings!) - you can have some fun! Polished liners I quickly found boring, so I paint them in either bright flourescent colours or Glow in the Dark.

These are users too! I have a lot of knives, but these regularly cycle through my EDC rotation. Anyway, all comments and feedback welcome, I will try to answer questions best I can.

Excellent work. I am so jealous of those whom have access to a CNC. I like the GID, but that blue liner Endura really catches my eye. Great work and welcome back to the forum. I would possibly look into increasing the handle width on that Endura though. A few dozen sharpenings and the tip will protrude the handle. At least you can monitor the progression as most others can not! :D

That looks really nice. After seeing someone remove the digicam and getting a cloudy clear scale, I've been itching for a cloudy clear Para 2.

Very, very slick work sir- I really like it :)
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

Now that's slick! It takes it further than the ghost jade ever could for transparency!

Let us know how they hold up once in use...!

Pretty sure I'm having a minor panic attack right now.

1) The clear scales are absolutely badass. I need a set of those for my Para 2, I love how they show the lock function.

2) You've solved my biggest complaint about the Endura/Delica, those damned points on the handle. That takes both knives up to another level.

3) Are you going to be offering these scales for sale, and if so how much?

Absolutely brilliant! I really like the clear/GID combination, especially so on the Para2.

I too am curious about plans to produce a batch of these scales for sale.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

No plans to make any quantity of these at the moment, but if there's enough demand I may (with Sal's blessing only ;) ). You never know, you may even see a Sprint run of one of these - that would be even better!
:D

The Blue Endura has been in my rotation for about 3 months now. I never bothered putting a clip on it, so it floats around in pockets and desk drawers... The scales still look good as new (but I am very careful with my knives, I use them, but don't abuse them). The ZDP steel is incredible! I only occasionally give it a strop when I remember, yet she's always shaving sharp (unlike some knives I have which seem to go blunt just sitting there!).

Those are really cool! I have never really liked glow in the dark handles but I like those. I also am digging seeing the locking mechanism.

Very nice! I like the straighter lines on the Endura, it's more Goddard like.

The clear is cool looking. I can't help but wonder how fast they get scratched up and cloudy looking or junk accumulates under there and looks grungy. Any insights into how well these wear in and age?

Awesome work. I'd snag a pair for an Endura or Para2 in a heartbeat. And the thought of a sprint run, , man oh man that would be slick. Thanks for sharing.
