My first venture into Scandinavian knives

#1

Post by phillipsted »

I am relatively new to Scandinavian-style blades, and wanted to post some pictures of my first two blades - I call them "brothers" because they share the same scale materials.

The first is a Poul Strande 85 Damascus blade. He makes such nice blades - absolutely beautiful steel. The scales are stabilized Karelian birch, white fiber spacers, a damasteel bolster, and something a bit non-traditional - a piece of antique maroon linen Micarta. The Micarta is an original recipe from Westinghouse and is over 50 years old. It is nothing like the commercial phenolic laminates available today - it is much denser, harder, and takes a lustrous finish. The knife is finished with only a bit of Renaissance Wax and buffing.

The "brother" knife is an Enzo Nordic 95 in O1 steel. I made this knife to be a user for woodcarving and camping. The O1 steel will take a fantastically-sharp edge. I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces. The scale is stabilized Karelian birch and antique maroon Westinghouse Micarta - both from the same blocks as its brother. The spacers are blue fiber and the bolster is brass.

Unfortunately, I'm still new at leatherwork, so I don't have sheaths to show today. I'm an eager student though, and my youngest son and I are working at making sheaths for these as part of his Boy Scout Leathercraft merit badge.

Cheers!
TedP

Fantastic job! On the Micarta, did it come that thick or did you have to glue a couple pieces together to make it thick enough?

I bought it from an antique Micarta specialist - and it came in blocks that were 1" x 1.5" x 6". I can't tell you how much different the genuine Westinghouse Micarta is from the generic phenolic laminate available from knife supply houses today. The old stuff is solid as a rock, works well, takes detail if you want to carve it, and finishes to a beautiful almost 3D sheen. Lovely stuff.

Pretty.. Let's see some feather sticks now! I love Scandi ground knives. It's the only grind I've used in the woods for awhile.

That is some nice micarta. Is it as annoying to work with as the modern stuff?

It does have peculiar odor when you grind it, yeah. :) It seems that this specific older block isn't as pungent as modern stuff, though.

Beautiful knives. In the first one, both damascus blade and birch handle have an awesome pattern.

Thanks for sharing.
