Show Your Wood Scale Mods!

I have often wondered why more people don't post mods using wood. Either they are shy or not many are doing it. But I have been seeing an increase lately, so here is a spot to do it.

I love a wood scale. To me the stock G10 or FRN is just a pattern that I'll throw out later. To get things started I thought I'd share some pics of a complete set of value folders I'm working on right now. Still got to put the clip on the Reslience and have not yet decided what wood to go with on the persistence (not pictured). Contemplating a yellowheart wood.

Forgive the blade scratches, i actually had been using these before customizing. Might have to get some new shiny ones to move the scales to....

I like the lighter colored wood. I mentioned using cedar to someone a while back but they weren't sure if it would hold up or not. I was shopping the other day and saw these blank slabs of cedar used to hang in closets, and thought they'd be the perfect size to make small scales out of. I think it would be a cool wood to use as inlays on something like a Kopa or Kiwi.

WMR....
Jealous of that leafstorm, what do you have going on there?

3-1-1,
That is Amboyna Burl. If you look closely at your Rolls Royce dashboard, you will see that it is made from the same wood.

I just ran out to check, and yes that is definitely the same wood as the dashboard on my Rolls. :p

Not quite so exotic a material on my wood scale mod:

What FRN model could you possibly replace the scales on without working for HOURS milling out wood for the inset liners? Ive only seen a delica with wood grips once... G10 liner lock models are definately by far the easiest to make scales for, frn knives the hardest. Ive made scales for a g10 dragonfly, and im considering making some ironwood burl scales for my GB. Not sure yet, we will have to see what happens!

i don't know of any easy frn replacement jobs. replacing the frn is a lot of delicate work with a flat router dremel bit for sure on all models i have opened up, but it can be done.

i am plannng on doing a tasman that way soon assuming I find what I expect to inside. would have started but the yellow frn h1 salt model i bought has rivets instead of screws. going to have to either drill them out and replace or buy the black model which appears to actually have some torx screws. my plan is actually to create a karambit style out of it with the finger hole.

Those are great looking scales Deacon!

@ DcDesigns do you have pictures of the dragonfly that you made scales for... On the thread that you made about it, it was never finished, I think you were doing zebrawood?

Wood on a spydie transforms thje look of it so much. I suspect that we see less because synthetics are more readily available in slim pieces already?

I have just picked up a kiwi slipit in stag that I'm going to replace the staq on - debating between synthetic or wood - all the pics here are making me think wood!! (i think I have some thin cut desert ironwood that could fit)

Depends on the size of the wood you are starting with, and what model of knife you are going to scale. If just doing a fairly simple g10 replacement (full metal liners), and using small, pre-cut knife scale blanks from one of the standard suppliers, I'd say a dremel, sanding paper, a good drill and some bradford bits should be enough. Get some polishing compound to shine it up at the end too, if you want some shine.

Deacon - I really enjoyed the photos of your Lignum Vitae retrofits. I'm putting the final touches on a ZDP-189 Mule in that wood now. What a great material to work with - tight grain, tough as nails, and pretty grain. It is also so oily that you don't need to put any finish on it. Love it. I'll post pics in the Mule pic thread later in the week.
