Does anyone else like Pro-tech knives.

Post by Mrj »

While Spyderco is ultimately my favorite knife company. I have a few Pro-tech knives. I mostly collect them as where the spydies get all my pocket time. I also try to stick with American made brands. Just throwing out a line to see what other brands you guys collect, use,or recommend. Thanks to all.

I don't have a ton of experience with Protech, but the few that I've had have been great.

As far as other brands I actively collect; Maxace. Probably two-thirds of my collection is either Spyderco or Maxace.
Currently testing: M398, D3, SLD-Magic
Favorites: 10V, s90v
Wishlist: S290, Vancron, S125V, K890
17 Spydies, 14 steels
13 Maxace, 9 steels

I only have one Pro-Tech, a CA-legal Runt that I've had for 20 or more years. I consider Pro-Tech (and DKD) to have the best auto action, at least on mine. I don't actually carry my Runt, though.

I took this pic of my Runt awhile back...

I’ve had a Walter Brend auto for about 15 years. Great action with
a 3inch blade. My wife has confiscated it and carries it in her purse.
She fumbles with all the different locks used in my collection. She says
“You just push the button to open/close”. I should probably get me another
One. ;)

My only Pro-Tech is the Malibu. It flips open smoothly and cuts well enough. The scales could use more traction though. I'm glad they have released newer versions with checkering.

I'm not into automatics so I haven't tried any.

I've only ever handled a couple of the Pro-Tech models but I did find the overall quality pretty good in the two I checked out. In the category of "Automatics" (switchblades) I think they rank up there pretty high from what I'm told. I'm not a huge fan of Automatics even though I've owned and used about a half a dozen different models over the years. The two automatics that I really liked were both Benchmade models. But I would most certainly take on a Pro-Tech if they ever came out with anything similar to the old Benchmade Boguszewski Spike models which is one of my all time favorite knife designs.

Most of Spyderco's knives ( folders) deploy very fast with a little practice>>therefore I find little need for an automatic. But I'm glad that Pro-Tech and other companies are out there to make these automatic folders available.

I’ve been trying to broaden my horizons recently. I think my next non-Spyderco knife will be a Microtech (or another Benchmade). I like Protech’s work, their materials and price point, but none of their models really call out to me yet. I am watching.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

You’ve got great taste Rick, but if I’m spending $300 on a knife it’s better be green (or at least brown). :winking-tongue

I like the large auto dagger, the Godfather. But I do not like the fact that your hand can slip onto the blade if you thrust into something hard. Haven't bought one yet.

I really like Pro-tech, I have a Malibu in blue with a reverse tanto and this…

It’s technically a Bradley but it was made by Protech. It’s called the Underboss. It closely resembles a Godson but the handle is wider and the blade shape is different. This particular one is a first production run #115 of 200.
Fit and finish is a 10 out of 10. I’d never part with it.

154CM DLC blade, anodized handle.

I enjoy their products and their warranty is also very good. Sent back a TR-3 that had a slipping lock and broken spring. Within a week it was back in my hands good as new. They used to make some nice daggers too(should have bought one when they were available). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to someone.
