I believe it's just a common. Alligator snappers are rare here too; I've never seen one in the wild.Manixguy@1994 wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 1:57 amConnor is that a Alligator Snapper ? Nope. Although, I think my son would like that idea.
I also found a tiny baby painted turtle while digging too. That one was much smaller, about the size of a quarter. Pretty cute. One of my co-workers took that one home to keep.

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
So they are inside the house ? Living in the Midwest these don’t exist , seems like a nuisance that could be full of fun and surprises. I started carrying my 10/22 in Polaris today , my neighbor two houses away had a Groundhog set up residence under her shed and has been coming from below our properties with a young one . It’s so big it can’t squeeze into my live trap . Maybe we can do a trade ? Dan

She brings in stuff all the time. Last week or the week before, she brought in that flying grasshopper I posted. Keep in mind, she only has 3 legs but does just fine. My dog likes to hunt the rats and chipmunks in the back yard. He is a boarder terrier and they like to kill. Not so much hunt. Just chase and kill. Living in the southeast, you get all kinds of critters.Manixguy@1994 wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 7:14 pmSo they are inside the house ? Bees be buzzin' around this time of year. My yard has a lot of flowers, many of which are natives. The local mountainsides are covered in purple sage. Two weeks ago I was way up there, and there were some guys in a flatbed truck loaded with hives. Despite the language barrier, we chatted a bit, and they gave me a big jar of honey. No wild honey is like any other--they're all unique. This one reminded me of fruit punch. Anyway, this girl was sampling one of my Shasta Daisies.

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Nice story , I get all my honey locally , better for you health wise which I’m sure you know . Our brother in law had hives for many years so we were never without a jar or two . When in Boy Scouts , I got the Bee Keeper merit badge . I was rabbit hunting timber when a kid with a buddy on a cold winter day , it was easily in the teens temperature wise . Buddy and I decided to start a small fire and have a snack . Once we got fire stated I sat on on ground and leaned my back against a small dead tree trunk and it cracked and fell over . Hundreds of Bees were inside and flew out and instantly died from the cold . I felt bad but had no idea . I used my hatchet and opened trunk up and it was packed with full honey combs . We pulled them out and took them home . The honey was very dark , almost black , very strong tasting . Just another boy adventure story . We have have a huge native Black Eyed Susan patch in backyard and will post pictures for you later this year since you like native plants . Thank you , DanRustyIron wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 11:25 pm

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Looking forward to seeing it. Black Eyed Susans are not native here, but they do well. Several years back I threw a few handfuls of assorted seeds into a flowerbed next to the driveway. A bunch of flowers came up, but the Black Eyed Susans really took over. They've been returning every year, and they last a loooong time.Manixguy@1994 wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 5:46 am

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Yesterday while working on a porch project friend and I noticed a pair of Eagles soaring above my backyard catching the thermals. They were too high to get a decent shot , but they left me a gift . Later in afternoon I decided to mow and walked backyard to pick up sticks and found what I believe an Eagle feather . Friend stopped back by and he collects feathers and gave it to him . The feather had a very distinct curvature that looked more aerodynamic than any feather I have ever seen before . It wasn’t there the day before when I walked to backyard three different times so know it dropped that morning . I will try to get a picture . Dan

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Careful you who let find out about that feather. Eagles are very protected in the US and owning even a shed feather can land you in a lot of trouble.Manixguy@1994 wrote: Yesterday while working on a porch project friend and I noticed a pair of Eagles soaring above my backyard catching the thermals. Speaking of Eagles though, I caught a glimpse of two Bald Eagles fighting in the air the other day while I was out fishing. One was still a juvenile and had not developed its adult colors yet.
(Please excuse my poor quality photos. They’re taken with my phone but it’s better than nothing I suppose.

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
I thought we were done with chickens when our one remaining hen went menopausal a couple years ago. But three weeks ago we picked up two more chicks, and Americana and a Rhode Island Red. The eggs will be a welcome treat, but more importantly, border collies enjoy watching over a flock. The birds are just as much for the dogs as they are for us. My plan wasn't to introduce the dogs and chicks face-to-face just yet. But the little ones are fond of breaking out of their enclosure, and several times I've found them foraging on the grass, scratching around in the dirt with the big hen, and just hanging out on the patio with the dogs.
