cold steel mayhem!

This Mayhem looks terrible and uses cheap steel that no Spyderco aficionado would get involved with. OK, so you thrust into the cavity of a large 140lb rabid dog charging you, and if you go beyond around 1.5 inches into the cavity the top of the blade gets hung up on flesh! Who was this designed for?

More deaths are associated with stabbings from gas station knives or cheap blade than anything else. Definitely not any high end knives or cold steel folders. ****, a modern $50 folder is better than what most murders are committed with. How often are you having to stab rabid animals with the folder in your pocket?

In my neck of the woods , most stabbings are domestic related using kitchen cutlery . Where I retired I knew two guys involved in this type of violence , one made it with horrific scars , the other didn’t make it . MG2

your biggest worry in a self defense situation with the mayhem will be convincing a jury of your peers that you weren't looking for trouble when you decided to carry a huge 6" knife called "mayhem" advertised by a bunch of overweight car salesmen weekend warrior mall ninjas stabbing it through car hoods and slashing slabs of meat.

this knife is for fun, not for carrying as a serious self defense option through seedy dark alleys in hopes you get attacked by a mob of thugs, a pack of wild dogs, zombies, aliens with intergalactic armor chasing you with anal probes, etc.

i'm sorry for those of you that have been the victims of violence. no one should have to experience that. i'm just saying, if you do have to defend yourself, you probably shouldn't be carrying a knife named mayhem, or even a knife with military in the name for that matter.

In 2019, I was walking my dachshund into a pet store. Some guy had left his dog-aggressive pit bull in the back of a pickup truck which had a cap with only screens in the windows. As soon as the pit bull saw my dog it became enraged, and before I could get all the way into the store it tore its way out and charged at my dog from about 50 feet away. My dog spun me around on her leash to get away from the pit bull, and before I knew what happened I found myself on the ground, with my dog's leash in one hand and my PM2 in the other. My wife restrained the pit bull a fraction of a second before I would've had to stab it to save my dog's life. Thankfully it wasn't human-aggressive, or I may have had to save my wife's life instead.

Knife defense is a very real thing, and a proper application of defensive techniques should integrate gun, knife, empty hand, and an ability to use improvised weapons as necessitated by the circumstances. As a defender, you typically don't get to determine the nature of a fight. With a leash in one hand, laying on the ground in a parking lot full of people, drawing my firearm and successfully discharging it at a small fast target in close proximity to both my wife and my dog would've been extremely risky.

Cold Steel markets many of their products for combative use. The Mayhem is an ideal example of one of their products which clearly presents itself as a fighting knife by its size, handle shape and aggressive appearance, but doesn't live up to that presentation with a design that's particularly optimized for knife defense when applied using modern techniques.

That was more so intended for the specific user. I understand it’s a real thing and am not trying to poke fun at it. I’d say the majority of his posts are unapologetically about self defense and so I had to laugh when he said that about a company who unapologetically makes knives for that specific thing.

Ok, I ordered the special edition in S35VN. I am looking to use it as a folding kitchen knife and to raise eyebrows. I am thinking I might be able to mod it to be a front flipper. Was thinking about taking down the wedge peak that would make it more pocket friendly as well as removing some of the butt. I wonder if I can find a deep pocket carry clip that will work.

If this mod is possible it would make it a much better user for me. I think it has a lot of knife edge that can rock on a cutting board.

the question now is do i get the espada xl i've wanted for years but keep putting off, or this mayhem? the mayhem is more likely to actually be used between the two, but neither would get used often.

I'd use the s35vn version if I wanted it. The design is for tougher tasks not mundane stuff that dulls my edges. All my experience with cold steel s35vn has shown me it performs exactly how I'd use the knife for. I think larger fixed blades or camp axe/hatchet would be better suited for carry for me. Design wise it looks like the tail end of the handle doesn't curve as much as my xl espada. So it probably carries slightly better. Legally I'd rather be caught with a hatchet than a large folder bcuz I can better justify needing that tool to cut a small tree down.

i'm not in for this one in s35vn. it's not that i don't like the steel, but the price isn't good for me. these huge cold steels are more of a novelty to me. and i'm perfectly happy with aus10a for these designs.

What Metal Complex was saying is that it was the largest knife that was still easy to manipulate (fidget) with its lock mechanism where you only need to pull back on as well as the other forms of opening. This was the last straw that made me want to get one. I think it could make a decent food prep folder.

I just bought the S35V limited edition one. I know I'll never carry it, but I couldn't resist. Knives don't have to just be practical. There's nothing wrong with fun.

First impressions…Ok, it’s a big knife.
It will need some modding to be able to EDC for me. The removal of the thumb stud and making a Spydie hole is a must imho because with such a large knife, a slow roll is best so you don’t Murthy’s law yourself and let gravity take over cutting something open on your body pretty good. I dropped a Caribbean on my foot and I should have got 2 stitches but I just taped it up. Something of this mass and edge length could do far worse. It is not an ideal self defense knife unless seeing a large knife would scare off an attacker because this is a hand and a half knife and the potential for taking from your hand is greater as well as a bit unwieldy. The ergonomics are both awesome and hideous at the same time so I will mod it for sure. It needs more traction on the scales for its size imho and will try putting skateboard deck tape on the handles to increase grip of a wrist flick opening. I will remove handle material so I can have a two finger choil at the pivot area as well as making it a front flipper and take off the hook in the butt as well as removing the pointed swedge on the spine. The lock up is good with just a small give on the side to side. I will probably not do this but I would perhaps relocate the hole position for the clip to be just under the lanyard hole so it fits 1/2” deeper in the pocket. Ok, now the good stuff. It’s a good quality biiiig knife. A lot of material to make this. My intended purpose of a pocket food prep knife/camp knife/peacock knife is assured. It does fit in a pocket well enough but you won’t put much else in that pocket. It can chop as good as a fixed blade but I would not do that unless needed. The curved spine with the notches makes it ideal for batoning in an emergency as well as a fero rod scraper/tinder scraper. It’s hair shaving sharp and could have an edge reprofiled to a 30 degree inclusive to be an even better slicer. It does manipulate quite well for its size but this takes a bit of getting used to. Inside waistband is the best carry position for me either inside waistband, vertical on my hip or 3 o’clock position or in front at an angle at me 1 o’clock This will be a fun project. Do I regret my purchase? **** no. Do I recommend it if you are even curious? **** yes. Is it a good value? **** yes. Is it ridiculous? **** yes. It needs to be modded for me to like it but the potential is all there.
