On the main channel(section of the forum) they had a nice thread about how the Spyderco forum has changed and evolved over the years. (Me) Not being anyone’s senior, I’ll share my thoughts here… I am glad no one hear takes themselves too seriously.

My brother is in town… he shared with me a nice cut he got last week. He was trying to open up a bottle of wine with a SG2 delica I gave him a few years back. I said, “Erik, I would never give you a dull knife!” I look at him, he was a little bone away from cutting off his pinkie… I feel slightly responsible, but I said it’s our mothers fault for always keeping dull knives!

Sorry to hear of the deep cut, but to respond to the above:

Back in the day, when I first joined up in aught seven, the Spyderco forum was a more serious place with a strong SD orientation. Lots of talk of slashing and stabbing and Silence of the Lambs was sort of an overarching meme, with I think three members taking their screen names from that movie. Not sure how to describe the tenor of that time, maybe gothic? I much prefer the science and the techno-nerd vibe that's replaced it. And we have a good deal more humor these days, more camaraderie, less one-upmanship, less dog-marking-his-territory behavior. And with the loss of one revered member, who shall go nameless, a lot less domineering invective and a lot fewer shout-downs.

Life is good here at the forum, thanks in no small part to the practitioners of humor who smooth the path and chamfer the sharp corners.

To illustrate my point ^ with pictures, somewhat less guy-with-bazooka and somewhat more nerd-bob.

A glamorous digital prize* awaits the first person who discovers a moral. Assuming, of course, that an immoral person can actually write a story with a moral.

*While I'm off topic, I'll continue to wade around in the marsh of my faulty cognition for a bit longer. A decade ago I was hooked on diet coke. Coke had this promotion running that if you drank enough of it, you could get free prizes. So I went for it. I drank cases of the stuff, and diligently recorded my excessive drinking with the company's website. After guzzling an unseemly amount, I was finally able to attain a prize. The company gave me a digital hat for a digital avatar.

That, in combination with their corporate woketarian ideology, put me off of Coke, and I haven't had one in years. But I do have a digital hat for a digital avatar, waiting for the person who finds a moral in this or any other fabrication I've invented true story I've told.

Well he is related to me, so there is something special about a grown man who thinks he can open a wine bottle with a delica.

He was using the Super Blue Gyuto today. He has all fingers present as of this writing!

Thank you for acknowledging Erik (my brother.) Trust me he will not be getting any Spyderco’s from me this trip. Perhaps I should only give him SAKs from here on out? Specifically the SAK models with wine openers… 😜

Thank you Bolster for the deeper perspective of our knife forum history. Such irony that at times words cut deeper than knives.

My appreciation of knives started with Swords. I fenced in college and about 6 years afterward kept up the hobby. SD is a piece of how I see Spyderco’s for sure… but it’s all talk unless you train with it. SD talk is cheap.

I don’t think I could be in any group that can’t laugh at itself.

The moral of the story our forum has changed from men in corners with rocket propelled grenades to men made of sponge with thick glasses and bad teeth.

All I want to know is how Shannon keeps so many tools and car parts in his sock drawer and how he keeps his sock so clean from grease and oil?

The world is my sock drawer. For wherever I go, my socks will be there also. And at least 2 knives of some sort.

Time to repost this nugget

I may just have to get a pair of those cargo socks to wear with my bedrock sandals on a hike this summer. For science of course. All for science.
