do i NEED a rajah 2?

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

i've never even really considered this knife before, but i actually really like the cold steel folders for tough use, and especially in the woods. i recently picked up a 4max scout as a beater camp knife that is just barely small enough that it can still be carried in an edc role. i also have a voyager tanto xl just in case i am ever in a serious urban survival situation (doubtful, but we sometimes have to dream up justifications for things we enjoy).

anyway, i'm now considering the rajah 2 as a woods knife. the kukri design has always intrigued me and this would allow for a smaller version that's easier to carry and more useful. plus, i think it would be great for chopping (not something i typically do) as well as more detailed carving. aside from the usefulness, it's just cool.

do i need one? what are your experiences with the rajah 2?

I've been successfully resisting getting one, so far at least. I have a few real kukris so I really don't need it, but a folding version is pretty cool. As you already know, many CS knives punch above their price range. Midway was pretty good pricing on it right now.

they're on sale on amazon right now (along with many other cs knives), which is what spurred this sudden need.

I had to google it. That's hilarious and absurd. Now I'm tempted to buy one just to carry as the 'loaner' when someone asks me if I have a knife. Or whip out with a Crocodile Dundee line...

i don't know that i'd say it's absurd. you can do everything you need to do with a folding knife with a sak. does that make all spydercos that are bigger and more expensive or fancy absurd? no. different tools have different uses and benefits. i could see this being a useful tool in certain cases, but i wouldn't edc it for sure.

to be fair though, i do have some knives that i open up every once in a while just for a laugh. this would likely end up being one of them, but i would actually use it also.

It would pair nicely with an Opinel Number 13. :)

Yep, go for it.
Mine is a lot of fun. 7+ years old in Aus. 8.
I am careful to open it two handed around strangers..
Friends love to hear the "thwack" when it's waved.
I carry mine in a canvas belt sheath I've made.
It is served me well when living in Coastal Fiji.

It doesn't have the weight when slashing through scrub, but the CS Kukri does.
Get one...

I doubt that anyone really needs a Rajah2. "Need" is seldom a deciding factor for me, so I already have one. It's fun to play with, less fun to sharpen.

one of the reasons i shied away from recurves for years was the same reason i didn't want serrations. i didn't have a sharpmaker. now, i'm fine with either. :)

Get an Espada XL. You'll have that Pacific Salt on your keychain.

Yes, that is a Native Chief between the Rajah2 and the Espada XL.

That's a great picture. It's also surprising, to me at least, that the humble Opinel makes the Espada XL seems small.

i've wanted the espada xl for a couple years now. i haven't purchased it yet because i know i won't use it. it would simply be for the novelty of it. i'll use the rajah 2 though.

There's nothing humble about the Opinel #13. It's a billy club with a bayonet.

"Billy club with bayonet" is an apt description. I knew that model was large but seeing it next to others is eye opening.

Yeah, the proportions are the same, but the size is something else. It feels big even in my outsized mitts.
