My first Boker

Post by Josh Crutchley »

I was advised to give the Boker Kalashnikov a try but the grip didn't appeal to me. When I can I try to buy local so I checked what they had today. That's when I seen the Boker Plus Strike Coyote spearpoint and had to buy one. It's only Aus 8 but that's just another steel I haven't tried. I also picked up the Walther P99 Tekmat.

I've never owned a Boker Kalashnikov, but I have the CFM-A1 and Trigonaut, both of which I like.

That Strike Coyote looks good. I'll have to check it out if its available at our local shop.

Tastes differ, which a good. If everyone liked the same things the world would be far less interesting.

As for the Boker Plus Kalashnikov, I own several. This orange one was my first. It has been fired thousands of times and is still going strong, :)

This one's my favorite. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a nice damascus pattern and this one is fantastic. :D

Kind of fond of this one too, not crazy about the blade shape, but like the blue handle and that it's FFG.

i really want a dessert warrior. i hope they come out with them again. i've always wanted a kwaiken too, but i think they cost too much for what they are. someday maybe.

that's an intense looking boker. i'm sure you'll enjoy it. :) and there is nothing wrong with aus8, in my opinion. it doesn't hold an edge for as long as a lot of these other steels we're used to, but i've found it perfectly adequate for my needs and i love how easy it is to sharpen.

I'm only going by pictures so in person I may like the grip. That damascus blade looks awesome haven't seen one like that before.

I'm still in that stage of giving all the different steels a chance. I really want to try them for myself.

That's hilarious, my brother loves pink frosting and sprinkles. I would definitely get him one if they ever come around again.

I just got done reprofiling it because on one side the bevel angle was very inconsistent. I only took it to around 15dps. It stropped nicely to tree topping sharp using 3 and 1 micron diamond paste on newspaper.

I've owned a few BOKER folders over the years. But to me BOKER are a lot like Al Mar>> because for a high quality folder they just don't offer as many current blade steel selections like Spyderco does. They still offer quite a few models in 440C and I wish they would opt for some of the newer blade steels like Spyderco does.

There are a lot of Boker's designs that I like however. I had an old Boker GEMINI made with X-15 TN stainless for many years. Before I got a few of Spyderco's H-1 models it was the main folder I used when snorkeling in Salt Water. Because X-15 TN is very corrosion resistant even though H-1 and LC200N are better.

That was interesting. Like I've said in the past I do have a lot of respect for Boker overall. And maybe most people who buy knives pay little attention to detail. But it has really baffled me as to why Boker doesn't ramp up to some of the newer/better blade steels.

I remember when I was a younger teenager many years ago we had a couple of Boker Butcher knives and they seemed like really high quality blades for professional uses. But over the years I've had great luck with Victorinox and Forschner knives for culinary uses. But Boker has always had a big market share in that field.

I guess for the most part that guys like us who are connoisseurs of these elite, high quality blade steels are truly in the minority. Why else would a company as big as BOKER not do some of their newer models with newer/better blade steels?

Boker has some models with high end steels, but you have to pay for them. $200-300 range and limited selection. It’s hard for a manufacturer to shift to the high end when they have made their money making modest pocket knives for the average person for a few centuries.

Spyderco is smaller, leaner, and much better a pivoting with the market.

That is a work of art, it's listed on their site as made to order at a very reasonable price. Have you had issues with the safety on yours?

BHQ has them in stock at $85, so about 2X the price of the non-damascus versions but still darn reasonable, IMHO. Thankfully, like the rest of my Kalashnikovs, it doesn't have a safety and the firing button is reasonably flush with the handle, so very little chance of an AD and zero chance of the knife locking itself. ;) Only annoyance with all of them is that the clips are extremely stiff.

That's a very reasonable price for such a beautiful blade, couldn't find anything on the forge, maybe a custom alloy? No safety is even better, you guys are so spoiled :) The one on böker.de clearly shows a safety switch on the back, much like my Jim Wagner* but it failed so your setup is much preferred. Lock that pivot so it requires an intent to fully deploy is always a good idea in my opinion also.
