Elastic Ceramic

Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors just posted a video with a ceramic knife that lacks one of the big drawbacks of ceramic knives. It's elastic. Sounds quite interesting in my opinion.

Amazing! Perhaps Spyderco will investigate this stuff.

He has made a couple posts on this forum, when discussing his work specifically.

I was going to ask how do I sharpen it but apparently I may never need to if it's only used for food prep.

The question for the possibility or impossibility to sharpen this material came into my mind too. I think it may be possible, that it maybe could be possible to sharpen. I imagine that with that elasticity the main problem (micro chips) could be eliminated (see: https://youtu.be/IDoWZ2-2yVk for sharpening ceramic knives) but that is just my guess and I don't know for sure.

The better quality ceramic knives can be sharpened (or rather polished) to a very high sharpness and hold it quite well:

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/for ... e.1206014/

I expect Roman Kase's elastic ceramic knives will be no problem regarding that aspect.
The main question for me is will this elastic ceramic material be able to take & hold smaller edge angles and lower behind-the-edge thickness numbers.

If this is the beginning of a new knife blade technology, then I find it revolutionary. Very interesting!
The steel industry will not be very pleased with this.

Should we count the days up to we see such a blade as MT.. mule?

I doubt the steel industry even notices cutlery. And certainly not high end cutlery in exotic steels. Even mass market kitchen utensils are probably only a tiny blip on their radar. The steel industry is _huge_ and has much, much bigger fish to fry than pocket knives.

And didn't Roman say that the material was developed by BU anyway?

In one of the videos he said the inventors didn't want to be named, of course all that could have changed by now.

Ah ok. I think maybe I just got confused by the fact that he has been able to get small quantities of steel (less than the normal MOQ) from BU (who he is local to) before.

This would have been right up SEF's alley. Where is he when you need him?

I really like his videos, I do, but I take them with a grain of salt.

He had lc200n ranked above m4 and something else, and that has not been my experience at all.

How is a ceramic blade being produced? I have no idea. But I can imagine that Spyderco would need to invest in different / new machinery maybe in order to be able to produce say a mule with this?

You must confuse me - I would never say something like that, wouldn't make any sense. Just for the record ;)

Eeeeeh... no. Batoning is just too extreme for this material that I could recommend it. At least this is true for the current generation - who knows what else will come after this. For now, I recommend one of my steel knives for batoning all day and then some. That being said, I don't know if you guys saw my abuse testing video of the ceramic, so I'm dropping it here:
