What is your profession?

I've been wondering for some time now what are the members professions, and do you fit Spyderco and other knives in it, or only during your free time.

I am an automation engineer working primarily in marine industry, half office - half terrain work mostly.

I started carrying Spydercos in my back pocket to work with a justification that I need to open equipment boxes (every 3-6 months :D), and now I just carry one everywhere. On rare occasions when I don't carry one, I usually need it most.

Also US Army vet, ex Police, security and numerous other jobs. Security was a second job that I worked 15 years at a one company at a plant here in NC while also working as a state employee. 2nd jobs were common for lifetime employees due to the low pay but good stability and benefits of the state workers. I knew very few permanent state employees who didn't work another job or have a business. More than a few were farmers who worked at the state job for benefits for the family. That was in addition to my (ex)wife working full time.

I'm a shipping/receiving coordinator as well as assistant warehouse manager for a paper mill. I use my knives all day/every day. I'd say 99.7% of the time I'm using a knife is at work. I don't carry one around the house with me unless I'm going to be doing some kind of project or doing outside work with the landscaping. I never use my pocket knives in the kitchen either, that's what kitchen knives are for!

I run a small rural municipal water system. Sadly, I rarely get to use my knives at work. Thankfully that is my second job.

My primary job is father, husband, homesteader and wilderness junkie. I use my knives far more in my free time. :)

System administrator (computers PC's and servers), and infrastructure geek. When last employed in 3 days our team would install 2,500+ PC's and servers, PC's one by one and servers/routers/switches by rack and stack. This was all in very large moves for clients(in transportation, logistics, or commodities) that had employees with 2 laptops and one desktop system, and 3 to 4 - 20+ inch monitors.

Working in huge high rise building in the Chicagoland area, I use my knives to get to and from work safely, and at work to cut cellophane, cable ties, etc.

I work in an office /warehouse. I'm a "material specialist" but essentially I provide tools and equipment for use in the gulf of Mexico for the oil and gas industry. I use my knives pretty often for task around the office and warehouse.

I’m a 911 paramedic. I carry my knives at work, though admittedly I don’t need to use them too frequently. I also keep leatherman raptor shears in my pocket that get used when material separation is required. I have many many more knives than I could ever need in my lifetime, but I just can’t stop :) and that’s ok.

Until retirement last month, I was an elevator mechanic. I carried one knife for nearly all cutting chores. Uses could be as simple as opening a box, cutting traces or components on circuit boards, stripping wire of all sizes, cutting wire, carving chopsticks, shaping plastic, shaving copper surfaces, jimmying locked doors, or opening the all-important bag of trail mix.

Nowadays, yard work and culinary art are added chores.

No knives allowed in public here, so I enjoy them at home. Fortunately I am working from home a lot these days!

I work for a technical recruiting/staffing firm. My official title is "office manager," but that only describes a little bit of what I do.. the company has ~200 employees, but they are almost all contractors on assignment at various client locations. I work in the "company headquarters" which consists of about 10 people. Because the main office is so small, we all wear many hats.. on a given day, I could be responsible for customer account management, recruiting, payroll, security, etc.. whatever is needed.

My work environment is a typical office, but because I handle all shipping/deliveries, I do actually use my knives pretty frequently at work, if only for unboxing office supplies.. :p

IT pro here. I've been 100% remote for 15+ years and so cannot use my job for knife justification. Even when I was unboxing, racking and stacking, my Leatherman did the lion's share of the cutting.

I have a Master degree in translation, though I have never worked as a professional translator. Ever since I graduated in 2004, I had been working as a buyer for a tier 1 supplier to the automotive industry. I quit in October last year (the company had turned sour over the last few years - more and more work for a stagnating and in the end even decreasing number of staff). I'll try to find something that gives me joy to do, as soon as I fully recovered from surgeries that needed to be done. There's still at least one more to go through, some time in May.

Foundations Engineer/Field Inspector - I need a cheap beater because too many times has a worker asked "does anyone have a knife?" and proceeds to use said knife to scrape something, cut against a steel beam, scrape concrete that got on PVC pipe, etc

Former retail management, currently tow/recovery. I also spent about 3 years in the corrugation industry (DON'T call it cardboard! lol) and a year in polyethylene extrusion (blown plastic film), both of which were pretty interesting jobs.

Surveyor. Various construction and property related roles, and since 2003 surveying & valuing residential homes for mortgage purposes.

I inspect a *lot* of buildings up to 200 years old or so, and some back to the 1400’s . My original Spyderco, a SG Delica was bought to dig around in old structural timbers. I’m more worried about legality these days, so I now carry a Tern, although the Delica is never too far away. All the others are just for fun.

I work at a metal fabrication shop. Most of what I do is run CNC lasers (6k and 8k) and CNC press brakes. I used to do welding too, but not so much anymore.

I don't use my knives at work as much as I'd like, or as much as I did in my previous job. (Construction)
