Re: My 1st CRK
No, IME, only the CRK's with bushing pivot (like a manix) will drop closed when lock bar pressure is removed. If you adjust a 'Zaan or Inkosi loose enough to do this there will be play in the pivot. I think this is also partly due to larger pivot and washers these two share.
The Sebenza 21 has the potential to be smoother but the 'Zaan/Inkosi is stronger (especially the 'Zaan with load bearing pivot stops) and infinitly adjustable for preferred action feel as well as to account for bushing wear.

Good to know - thanks! I'm still pretty new to the CRK club, so still learning these things.Cycletroll wrote: ↑Sat Mar 27, 2021 1:14 pmNo, IME, only the CRK's with bushing pivot (like a manix) will drop closed when lock bar pressure is removed. Re: My 1st CRK
CRK's are a bargain given the level of material quality and precision in fit & finish they have.
Is funny how at 1st, looking at a Sebbie 21 for example, one thinks "nice but boring". Over time and after using one to do real work with you come to appreciate just how good they are.
When I can't figure out what knife to carry I almost always default to my double lug 21. Just a can do knife.

Re: My 1st CRK
My Inkosi can drop shut with a slight shake, no blade play either. Definitely not "drop shutty" though, but closes nicely.

Re: My 1st CRK
Totally! My Inkosi does the same when adjusted "just right". Not really something I'm after as a slight bit of fluorine friction (;) is a bit safer IMO. Just my observation after owning many CRK that the pivot bushing variants are more "drop shutty" :
Re: My 1st CRK
Same. A little shake will drop it. And the Zaan will drop with a slightly bigger shake. My 21 drops freely under its own weight, though. Anyhow, when actually using them I never close any of them that way, so it really doesn't matter (to me, anyhow). I was just curious.

Re: My 1st CRK
I'm okay with my S35VN Zaan... I'll make do without the 10 additional Vs for now :)
Re: My 1st CRK
Honestly, I seriously doubt I could tell the difference btw s35vn and s45vn run at the same hardness. But I am interested to see if the higher hrc on the s45vn leads to better performance.

Yes, I'm also curious to see how much of an advantage S45VN brings to the table. For sure, when they release a large Sebenza 31 PJ insingo in S45VN, I will be very tempted to get one.

She's not the fastest flipper but, man does she make up for it in the smooth dept :D
I'll eventually make my way back to an S45VN Zaan someday.

Was thinking about you Julia, and just in case you might be interested in an MKT, these beautiful Praetorian blades just became available on KnifeJoyJuPaul wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 8:49 pmThat's an incredible looking knife, for sure! Thanks! I think the Praetorians are a bit on the chunky side for my tastes and hands, but I've seen several of these pop up, and they are very tempting...MacLaren wrote: ↑Thu Apr 01, 2021 11:00 amWas thinking about you Julia, and just in case you might be interested in an MKT, these beautiful Praetorian blades just became available on KnifeJoyJuPaul wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 8:49 pmThat's an incredible looking knife, for sure! Re: My 1st CRK
You should try one sometime Julia.
They are extremely nice.
Heck, just getting to try different blades is so much fun in itself. For me the best one I've had were - and in no particular order, were Hinderer, Medford, CRK.
Those 3 in particular are just very nice.
I really wanna try a Shirogorov though. Just can't make up my mind on which one. For the longest time I wanted a 111. But, I also like the F95 I think?

Re: My 1st CRK
I definitely plan to get a Hinderer as soon as the xm-18 3.5" skinnys come out again. (I gave the Half Track Bowie a shot recently...not for me. Just too thick and boxy. But I think I'd really like the bigger skinny.) And of course I am really, really loving my CRKs. But I will say, the Shiro Neon will not be my last Shiro. The more time I spend with it, the more I realize how totally incredible it is. Everything about it is 100% perfection. An F95 is next, or maybe an F3 if Recon1 gets one with purple carbon fiber.MacLaren wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 7:40 amYou should try one sometime Julia.

*** CRK n00b seeks advice on first purchase ***
It's been quite a while since I have purchased any non-Spyderco knives, and I think I'd like to try a half dozen or so nicer knives all from different companies that I haven't tried before which for this discussion let's just say Benchmade, Hogue, and Sig.
FWIW: My purchase of a Paysan and subsequent window-shopping of Peter Rassentis' customs has spurred this on for me.
So on the Spyderco side I really like the Police4, Shaman, & Manix2 models as well as most all the Taichung Titanium models (K2, Paysan, SpydieChef, etc). It would be so awesome if I could get a suggestion or two for a good first CRK model? I have wide (not fat) paws so I'd like my first one to be in the medium+ to large size, price wise I'd like to stay under 500 for my first, although if there was a compelling argument I might go a little higher. Thanks for you time, I appreciate it, and if you have any other brand/model suggestions I'm all ears. TIA!
Cheers,
John
