My dad turned me onto Clint Eastwood westerns when I was a kid. Took me to see "every which but loose" and "any which way you can" to name a couple.

He was in Vietnam but only told me a few things.

One was he was scared to death and layed in his tent at night crying, bombs going off close to them.

Not really.

:D

I actually remember seeing the poster for it, but never went to see it.

A few more John Carpenter movies I really like from that era:

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). It’s a crime/action thriller that almost has the feel of a zombie film.

Christine (1983). IMO, the best demonic vehicle movie ever made.

Starman (1984). Pretty much an opposite take on aliens from John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Prince of Darkness (1987). OK, it’s outside of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s era, but it a good John Carpenter film that’s vastly underrated.

Jim,

Salem’s Lot is a great film. IMO, it’s one of the better vampire movies ever made, and it was a made-for-TV movie. I only like a few vampire films.

IMO, the best horror movies rely on mood/atmosphere more than FX or overdone attempts at jump scares. I remember watching Salem’s Lot the night it premiered on TV in ‘79. The spookiest parts involved the creepy dead boy (I think the character’s name was Danny Glick).

Jim,

Saw it too in 1979.

Danny was the older one, Ralphie Glic was the young one, the one I think you are talking about.

Yeah, was scary.

The Shootist is one of my all time favorite movies. It is about an aging lawman/gunfighter who is dying of cancer. It is poignant because John Wayne's cancer soon returned and he died. It has an all star cast, the best of the best and it a finely acted movie.
I Pray Heaven to Bestow The Best of Blessing on THIS HOUSE, and on ALL that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under This Roof! (John Adams regarding the White House)

Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King--
Else, wherefore born?" (Tennyson)

I saw that, but it’s been nearly 40 years...

Most of these fall outside of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s time period, but a few more films of the past I like a lot...

Excalibur (1981; IMO, the best King Arthur movie ever made)

The Legend of **** House (1973)

The Haunting (1963)

The Big Gundown (1966; my favorite spaghetti western that didn’t star Clint Eastwood)

A Hard Day’s Night (1964)

Even though it’s a late-‘80s movie, it deserves inclusion here:

They Live (1988)

Another John Carpenter classic.

Nice list, probably totally outside of this forums usual audience :D
From Jarmusch 80s I liked more Down by Law (1986).
From Coen I liked more the later films in the 90s, Bergman I liked more earlier films.
Bob Hoskins had a good one in Mona Lisa (1986).
I think nobody mentioned Brazil (1985) Terry Gilliam.
