Those are solid choices.

There are too many great movies from that era. As far as movies that “ almost everybody” in the West had heard about, here’s some of mine, in no particular order:

John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982)
Suspiria (1977)*
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
Sorcerer (1977)
Carrie (1976)
Escape From New York (1981)
Raging Bull (1980)
The Fog (1980)
My Bodyguard (1980)
Alien (1979)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Terminator (1984)

*Suspiria is considered more of a cult classic in the States, as it’s an Italian horror film.

I don't own very many DVD/BD, which means if I have the DVD/BD then it must be a favorite. So here's a list from a quick look through the DVD/BD shelves:

1979: Alien
1980: Airplane!
1981: The Dogs Of War, Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982: Blade Runner
1984: Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Red Dawn, Terminator

These are not movies, but a few TV shows from that timeframe that I have one or more seasons on DVD:

1980: Magnum P.I.
1982: Police Squad!, Black Adder

Coincidentally, Lone Wolf McQuade is the most recent post in my “Favorite Movie Fight Scenes” thread.

I really liked S&S too. Magnum and S&S were shown back-to-back on (I think) Thursday nights. I also really liked the Dodge Power Wagon that Rick Simon (Gerald McRaney) drove in the show. I'd take that truck over Magnum's Ferrari.

Since there has been reboots of Hawaii Five-O and Magnum (and now The Equalizer too), I've been wondering if S&S is going to come back eventually. Although if it does, it will probably be modernized and be two sisters this time.

Back to movies... I don't have this one on DVD/BD, but a movie that falls into the "so bad it's good" category from that era is "Damnation Alley" (1977).

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

IMO, the best zombie movie ever. Great storyline. Plus, I prefer zombies to be shuffling. It doesn’t make sense that someone who is undead screams and runs around like Usain Bolt, like they do in the recent zombie films.

Yeah it was an interesting movie, was low budget, but it did have a plot.

Forgot to mention:

Top Secret! (1984)

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke (1978)

I’m sure there’s still more...

That time period is interesting because it's between the early 70's disaster movies and the middle to late 80's mindless in a coma no plot action movies.
