Apparently New Balance makes skateboarding shoes now. It was bizarre walking into a skate shop and basically seeing nothing but Vans, Converse, New Balance and Nike.

Image

The current crop of skate shoes around here seems a little more fashion oriented. I've never found the basic vans and converse to makes good skate shoes. The canvas uppers get ripped up too fast.

I guess I'm gonna have to look online for the thick, bulky late 90's style shoes that have enough padding for someone 220lbs. These new balances are comfortable and look like they'll last ok aside from the complete lack of lace protection, but the padding is more minimal than I want.

Landed most my usual tricks with them, they broke in quick. Kickflips and backside flips are off the menu though...something about these shoes messes them up for me. Maybe I need to wear them in a bit more.

You're right. No more double/triple layer suede and or leather protection above oversized gum soles and sidewalls. Lace holes higher up so you don't easily fray or shred your bottom laces. Super thick tongues, some with a pouch inside to store your house keys or whatever small things you have.

I was actually browsing last night after my post, this brand Globe has some pretty heavy duty looking shoes...though I miss some of the over built ES, Etnies, DC's, Axion, Osiris that I always loved.

Had a pair of basic Vans ONCE...when I was working on my backside 180 kick flip and front side noseslides on my buddy's rail in his backyard. I destroyed the bottom lace hole in the matter of hours and never bought another pair! Back when I would walk my neighbors dogs everyday after school for $20 a week to buy my gear when I was 14/15. I remember the hurt of feeling like I just wasted so much money haha!

Pretty psyched, I've got a brand new complete board showing up today from my longtime favorite vendor CCS!! I went with a plain CCS deck. I'm probably going to cover it in all my knife exclusive stickers and what not that I've been accumulating...There's a lot of kids and even people in their 20-40's riding long boards in our neighborhood lately, it's awesome!! Everyone has been having a blast.

I'm also starting to set aside a lot of crates that we get in here at work, to dismantle them and make a few fun boxes at different heights to practice grinds and slides. I'm pretty freaking pumped right now! I'm anticipating this board today, more than I anticipate a new knife :p

I need to find me a new deck. I was having a lot of fun that last time I went out to the skatepark.

You gotta post some pictures of your new board and any fun boxes you put together!

Riced it out with all my knife life stickers, with the help of the kid telling me where to put them...I can honestly say I never expected to be doing this again :D

Of course its been raining all day, so I'll have to wait to test it out.

You're not kidding! I was browsing the clothing on their site and was amazed they still make shirts that I used to have 20+ years ago. I almost bought 2 Alien Workshop shirts I had...but figured at 38 years old, that may look a little ridiculous and overboard haha! Nostalgia hit me hard :)

Taking a skateboard commuting to my office or commuting short distances is never a bad idea at all. :) Riding a skateboard is not only cost-efficient but also a healthy way of commuting.

So I was thinking of a couple crates like this. Obviously screw everything together and get some left over angle iron we have here to use to grind on. I'd like to get a few of these, maybe screw a few together flush if I can to make an 8ft long box...would be tough to transport though.

I think this will work! Just to get everyone started. There's inserts that I can add to make it higher or lower by 6" increments.

Needless to say....I can't wait to get this home and try it out! 15" high, 8ft long when butted up together. They sit pretty flush, I'm just debating of I should cut the metal into (2) 4ft sections and risk there being a gap that would effect grinds, or just leave it as an 8ft piece and screw it on each time we use it.

What do you guys think?

that looks really well done! I'd leave the metal as one piece.
