Wouldn't be an SD discussion on the Spyderco Forum if I didn't bring up Michael Janich's MBC and CBC videos :D

They cover the subject of when and how to draw your knife. Bonus the demo knife is a Spyderco.

One of the reasons Im a huge fan of Spyderco is the Spyderhole. I can marble flick just about any spydie open with my thumb. Practicing with the trainer, I got pretty efficient at it. I can draw and open a delica as fast as I can draw and open one of my Microtech Autos. Only the waved models open faster. If speed is you're concern and you're not carrying a fixed blade in a pressure sheath, knives like the Waved PM2, Endura, Delica, P'kal, and Karahawk are the fastest on the draw.

I've been carrying the P'kal a lot lately. The wave, reverse grip draw, just the overall design of the knife in general make it one of the easiest knives to get out of pocket and ready.

*I forgot 5x5 combat solutions sells a 'bolt on' wave for the Yojimbo and a few other spydies.
I need to buy the Spyderco Trainer to train opening via thumb flick. I've done it a few times but I think I'm placing too much pressure in to it. Maybe I need to loosen the pivot just a bit too.

And yes, I missed Mr Janich's videos.

Lesson learned: Don't think you have seen all the tape out there. Obviously I had not.

I have the 5x5 combat solutions "bolt on" wave for the Yojimbo, I have not installed it yet.

With the internet being what it is I'm sure there are lots of things we will never see or know about. That's the best thing about this forum though. We can all bring what we've seen or know and share with like minded individuals. Space is very important in conflict. Just don't think it always means getting a few feet away. Sometimes it's staying close in so they can't get a full swing. Much better to be in close proximity to someone with a baseball bat than 3 feet away in the apex of their swing. Crag Douglas does some nice close in work. Calls it extreme close quarters. Also more of a force on force approach to really stimulate stress and emphasize your deficiencies. Something to check out because he does this with edged objects and firearms.

Does anybody here remember the video that was on YouTube several years ago, that showed one man armed with a large knife (IIRC, a kitchen knife), rushing, chasing down and killing several armed cops? I believe it happened somewhere in Central America; possibly El Salvador. The cops had had their shotguns trained on the man, but he rushed them anyway, and they seemed unable or unwilling to shoot for some reason. IIRC, he took out maybe four of the cops. I never understood why the cops never fired. Or maybe they froze up. Whatever the reason, it cost the ones he got to their lives. It happened in a wooded type of area.

I’ve tried to find it again, but that video is no longer on YouTube (as far as I know).

Thanks, Naperville, that’s the incident. I had the wrong country in mind. The version I saw in the past was the entire uncut version with no English, no soundtrack music and no voice-over, which made the stark reality of the situation hit home even more than the reality TV-style format.

A little aside about waved knives. I had a pkal for a while and if I drew it too hard sometimes it would bounce back instead of locking. Just something to be aware of. Could have been an isolated incident but in a stressful environment you might pull harder than intended.

That is a good thing to know.
