tops tools

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

tops has a few knives that seem to be really great and useful designs, but i’m having trouble getting past the fact that they are mostly owned, and sometimes designed, by complete tools. the whole sharpened pry bar to conquer a city and crush any skulls that stand in the way of your extreme tacticoolness is a real turn off.
i honestly don’t think i’m better than anyone else, but i’m having a hard time wanting to be associated with people of that mindset. in my mind, it’s a lot of what’s wrong in the world of knives, guns, and even preparedness as a whole. there are real reasons to prepare and real contingencies to be ready for without making yourself a caricature.

So, the Rock Salt, Tuff, Darn Dao, Szabo Folder, Szabo Hawk, Hobbit Warrior, Ronin, Yojimbo, and Yojumbo do not appeal to you either?
I find Tops over-priced for what they offer, but most of their designs are just modifications to traditional fixed blade designs, with exceptions of course.

Just seems like she wants to cause strife and division.
I mean, I like all knives. If someone is acting inappropriately, then I don't mess with them.
She really wants to "classify" people.
I think that's terrible to be quite honest.
I always try and be open minded, let people write their own ticket with me per se.
Again, Im not sure why she is so angry with bigger, stronger built blades and as she says, "the tools" that own them. That's just very harsh and unfair.
If anyone knows anything about blades to begin with, what matters is the thickness behind the edge, not the blade stock itself.
And, not every knife has to be able to slice apples or tomatoes.......

The TOPS folks are good people. They cater to primarily military and LEO in their product lines....big, tough knives that get used hard and often abused in accomplishing the mission. Like Spyderco, many of their designs are collaborations...some with known makers and some with the military personnel in the field. I've gifted a few of them (and several Spyders) to my friends in Iraq/Afghanistan and never had a complaint.

If you don't like them, don't buy them...simple as that.

first, i’m a dude. my name is ladybug because it was my first spyderco when i was a kid.

second, i’m not trying to cause strife or division and i’m not trying to prejudge people. that is my assessment after joining a tops group. i joined because i really like some tops designs, but i can’t handle the ridiculous mentality of most of the people there.

one of the best examples i can think of is the skull crusher extreme. really...? that’s even worse than all the zombie garbage that’s out there. why can’t we just have cool knives without being a caricature?

i have and love the yojimbo. it’s a great knife. mr. janich is a sensible dude that built a sensible knife for a purpose. conversely, watching ej snyder promote his designs is even harder than watching lynn thompson. that’s a difficult feat to pull off.

finally, for the record, i’m not against overbuilt knives. i have an esee 5 that i really like and i like quite a few of tops, designs. i just can’t handle the attitudes of some of these people that design, promote, and use them.

it should be that simple... i have always liked the tracker, but never bought one because they are ridiculously priced. i’ve been considering pulling the trigger lately, but after hearing the back story of the knife and how it came to tops, i don’t really want to support that. at very least, i don’t want tom brown’s name on the knife if he stole the design. i realize there are other options out there, but they are usually even more expensive and out of reach.

WOW! Excellent points brought up by both sides. Started to get a little personal but quickly got back on track. Well done folks. This is what I consider to be an honest, open discussion that ended on a good note. :D
