NFL Season: 2020-2021
Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
It seems like Bill is ready to draft a QB. I'm excited to see what he can build from scratch. Cam is just a placeholder at worst and if he is healthy a MVP at best. The Empire is about to Strike Back lol

Based on Cam’s performance last year I don’t even think he is a good backup. I am not optimistic.
They do have lots of cap space. We will see.

Didn't Cam have similar numbers to Wentz last season? Cam at least had the most QB rushing TD's last season so he's not totally useless

I reckon its up to Cam, as to how good Cam can be. I say that because, he's only 31.
It'll be interesting to see....

He’s an athlete, no doubt about it. His size and his athletic abilities have value. His complete inability to read a defense and to make throws under pressure is impossible to overlook. He also struggles when he needs to play fast paced.

Better uses of $14 million:
• Any other QB in the league
• WR's, TE's, Defensive front 7
• 14 million dollar menu items at McD's
• Charity
• Throw it into the Charles River
I still think it would be fun if Jimmy G came back to NE. I'm guessing this move means we are putting a lot of faith in the draft.

Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
Meh, there's no such thing as a bad one-year deal. Only $3.5 million is guaranteed. The team has a ton of cap space, so Newton's deal won't hurt their ability to restock the roster. Jimmy G is under contract for '21 and '22. If you think the Patriots can win it all in the next two years, then Jimmy G makes more sense. I think the Patriots are looking to retool and start a new competitive window. Jimmy G (by age or by contract) and the new competitive window don't align. From a fan's perspective, these types of deals aren't exciting, but they are a part of the ebb and flow of teams being competitive.
Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
If Cam was guaranteed that whole $14 million, that would have been a bad one-year deal! I still had a good laugh at "Throw it in the Charles" though. LOL :D
I agree with Darbys assessment of Cam though. There were times last year where he was just oblivious to pocket pressure and would get lined up and from 5 yards out because he would be too indecisive and hold onto the ball too long. He was also wicked inconsistent actually throwing the ball. He made some nice passes but they're hard to remember among all the other throws that landed at his receivers feet.
They have to be in the market for QB still but with free agency starting in a few days, I think having Cam signed before that is partly a tactic for them entice other players to come to the team.

Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
Even if the deal was fully guaranteed, it would not be a bad deal. Contracts are bad when you are stuck paying a player more then they are worth for several seasons. Every team can stomach one poor season, because you can part ways at the end of the year and put that money to better use for the following season. Risk should be assessed over the long-term. In this regard, a one-year deal limits risk.
Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
In my opinion, $14 million guaranteed would have been paying way too much for Cam Newton. Might not be a bad deal but it would be poor use of their cap space.

Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
With Newton under center this year, the clock has started ticking for 2022. Stidham is still young enough that he can take the next step in his development, but he hasn't really shown anything in his limited playing time. There really isn't a free agent QB out there worth a contract when compared to options currently on the roster. I supposed they could make a trade, but a deal for Watson is going to hinder the team's ability to add future talent via the draft. Wilson doesn't want to go to New England. Jimmy G is often linked to the Patriots, but I don't think that would be a good idea. Maybe somebody becomes available after the draft. You figure they need to draft a QB, right? Rumors that Gilmore might be traded, which could help the team add another pick or two. Plus the team upgraded their picks in the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds. The team has options, but there are no easy answers for the long-term QB. It will come down to player development.

When you have that much money, there's no real reason to wait out the market.
Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
Definitely overpaid for Jonnu Smith! I mean, good for that man and his family...but he's really only had 1 decent season. The fact that he's getting more from the Pats than Aaron Jones got from the Packers really blows my mind.

Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
Isn't Jones a RB? Comparing contracts between a RB and a TE gets a bit tricky.
Smith is now the third highest paid TE. Does that mean he is the third best TE in the game? I don't know, but one way to look at it is that Smith will cost less than a top-tier WR. The Patriots desperately need pass catchers, so the Smith deal could be seen a way to get receiving help without having to pay WR money. They still need another WR though.
Re: NFL Season: 2020-2021
The way their spending money, I wouldn't be surprised to see Golladay or Fuller end up there within the next couple days. If ANY team needs a WR1, it's the Pats...followed closely by my Giants. (really hoping we can snag either of those guys)
