Knife Rights: WA & WV Bills Pass Critical Hearings

#1

Post by critter »

The Washington state “Spring Blade” (Switchblade) Knife Ban Repeal bill, SB 5782, was reported out the House Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee by a 12-3 vote with a “do pass” recommendation. Next step would be a vote by the full House. We will let you know when it is time to contact House members.

Thanks to the hundreds of Washingtonians who used Knife Rights’ Legislative Action Center to email the committee members. It had a huge impact!.

Knife Rights would also like to thank Committee Chair Christine Kilduff for allowing the bill to come for a vote and Ranking Member Morgan Irwin for his support.

Knife Rights’ has helped enact 16 Switchblade Ban or Restriction Repeals since 2010: Alaska, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

West Virginia SB 96 that would expand the state’s firearms preemption statute to include “deadly weapons,” including knives, was passed by the House Judiciary Committee with a minor amendment that does not affect the Knife Law Preemption aspect of the bill. It now awaits a floor vote of the full House.

We will let you know when it is time to contact House Members on this bill.
Preemption prevents enforcement of existing local knife ordinances, and prohibits new ordinances, more restrictive than state law which only serve to confuse or entrap law-abiding citizens traveling within or through the state.

Knife Rights passed the nation’s first Knife Law Preemption bill in Arizona in 2010 and has since passed preemption bills in Alaska, Georgia, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin.
