Corrosion or grind lines?
Hello I just received a new dagger made from s30v and noticed that it was pristine except at the very tip. Is this some sort of machine mark or corrosion? I have tried wd40 and elbow grease to no avail.

Looks more like a burnt tip from powered grinding.

Probably so, but may depend on the steel. Do you know what the blade steel is?Fright_Fox wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2019 1:31 amIf this is the case does it make the steel weaker? Thanks.
Edit: oops, I see you listed it in your post. :o
It depends on how hot it got and if that exceeded what the blade was tempered at.
Someone who is familiar with s35vn and its heat treatments could better answer this.

No worries I’ll ask the maker. Thank you.

Thought I would follow up, the maker advised me it was just not buffed our after the burnishing phase and it has now come out with a sharpen that they offered to pay for.

Re: Corrosion or grind lines?
If it's overheating during edge grinding and the color of the steel being pale straw (instead of purple/blue), I doubt the damage to the steel is very deep. A few sharpenings and removal of surface and edge material should bring back the properly heat treated steel underneath, so don't stress too much over it.
