Suggest a traditional

#1

Post by vivi »

I'm looking for a new traditional knife. Here are the features I'm after:

- Two blades. One large blade with belly (clip, spear, etc.), and a second straight edge blade (wharcnliffe, sheepsfoot)

- Thin carbon steel blades (SS isn't a dealbreaker though)

- Wood, bone, or stag scales. I want to avoid plastics.

- Rounded ends / bolsters.

- About 3 to 3.75" closed and under 3oz

- No large logos on the blades

- No nail breaker backsprings

- USA made preferred

- Under $100

Case Mini Trapper? The variations are endless and they hold up well to real world use.

The mini trapper looks nice but I think I found something even better for me:

Now I just need to find one in stock with scales I like.

I love my GEC 86. I thought to suggest that too, but it is both bigger and heavier than requested at about 4 inches closed and 4 oz.

It is an awesome knife. I got the natural micarta covers.

That reminds me, I want to avoid half stops. That one you linked looks great otherwise.

Last night I found a Case that looked nice but it had half stops. I want the opening and closing to feel smooth the whole way.

Problem is they seem to always be sold out.

I remember last time I looked for a GEC knife, the green micarta sodbuster, I couldn't find any in stock.

They look well made. I'd like to get one some day.

Gec 82 possum skinner elderberry(red) jigged bone $103 at DLT. Not sure if the 82’s have a half stop or not?

Made in China. I thought they were American made but checked knife center and they say China. O well.

Those CV wharncliffe trappers and swaybacks look tempting. I don’t know about the half stop.

Vivi did you find a traditional yet? And if so, which one did you go with? Any reviews?

Some of these old Boker Tree Brands fit your criteria, and they're about $50.

I have a couple in mind I'm debating between. I found some patterns from Case, GEC and Utica that have a clip blade on one side, wharncliffe on the other. That's the layout I want.

https://cutleryclassics.com/product/tid ... 28318-new/

Something like that but closer to 3.5" with a natural scale material or their green micarta.

I have a bunch of different knives bookmarked. Here's another that looked interesting, but I don't know anything about the brand:

I'm taking my time with this hunt and trying to find the best one for me. 3.5" or so, natural scales, rounded bolsters, no nail breaker backsprings clip and wharncliffe carbon blades.

Vivi, I hope you see this, as i see the username change. Anyhow i just got my hands on, today, a GEC Eureka Jack in OD green micarta (available at multiple dealers ~88USD). The thing is lovely, especially with a wraparound back spring on the secondary blade. If you can get over the half stops i think you'd love it.
