Does anyone else go down this rabbit hole too?? :D
Well... sort of, but not exactly. I'm more of a handgun guy. I'm not much into shooting paper, and the long walks required to set up targets at long distances bore the heck out of me. I'd rather throw an empty beer can as far as I can, then walk it out beyond visual range with my sidearm.
But recently I've been curious. I bagged a big, inexpensive scope and stuck it on a carbine length rifle with a cheap barrel. It was just yesterday that I took it out to see what I could do with it. See the attached pic. Keep in mind, I'm not a rifle guy and I'm just making it up as I go with the gear that I had available. At fifty yards, I got a couple 3/4" three shot groups. I was very pleased with that. About 400 yards out was a dorm fridge or filing cabinet on the side of a hill. I could consistently hit it, which was also pleasing.
If I wanted to do better, I think the first step would be a real shooting table and shooting rest. Then I could get a good barrel of an appropriate length. And maybe some good ammo. Maybe then a good scope. Then I could throw it all away and buy the right rifle off the shelf. I think this is the rabbit hole you're talking about.
