Getting back into some long range shooting.
Just got a new GEN ii PST Viper 5-25×50 delivered this a.m.
Will be shooting an FN Herstal PBR XP 300 wsm in an A5 McMillan stock.
Does anyone else go down this rabbit hole too?? :D

Used to years ago.

Had a Custom Mauser Action in .22-250 Ackley Improved that I used for long range ground hogs.

I could take them out to around 700 yards or so.

Had a B&L 24X Target Scope on it.

Used to some LONG RANGE shooting with a Barrett .50 Cal that I didn't own, but could use.

I was pretty good out to around 1,800 to 2,000 Meters with it...

I was young then, was back in the early 90's when I was still very active in shooting.

Well... sort of, but not exactly. I'm more of a handgun guy. I'm not much into shooting paper, and the long walks required to set up targets at long distances bore the heck out of me. I'd rather throw an empty beer can as far as I can, then walk it out beyond visual range with my sidearm.

But recently I've been curious. I bagged a big, inexpensive scope and stuck it on a carbine length rifle with a cheap barrel. It was just yesterday that I took it out to see what I could do with it. See the attached pic. Keep in mind, I'm not a rifle guy and I'm just making it up as I go with the gear that I had available. At fifty yards, I got a couple 3/4" three shot groups. I was very pleased with that. About 400 yards out was a dorm fridge or filing cabinet on the side of a hill. I could consistently hit it, which was also pleasing.

If I wanted to do better, I think the first step would be a real shooting table and shooting rest. Then I could get a good barrel of an appropriate length. And maybe some good ammo. Maybe then a good scope. Then I could throw it all away and buy the right rifle off the shelf. I think this is the rabbit hole you're talking about.

My personal favorite caliber for hunting and target shooting is the Win .270 caliber. I've just had the very best luck with that round over the years. Just wonder if any of you guys ever shot a Rem. .22-250 caliber or a Win. .270?
I may have. I use to shoot everyone's rifles at the ranges. Those are good calibers.
Have you got to shoot any if the new Nosler calibers?
I came so close buying a 26 Nosler. CZ makes a nice that is somewhat affordable.
NO, I've not been out shooting for quite some time.

What I'd like to do is to move West to the states between Idaho and S.Dakota. Then I'd try out XLR. I'm in Illinois and as far as I know there are no XLR ranges.

I love to shoot. It is a great distressed. I used to regularly shoot out to 400 meters. It’s been years, though.

That Gen II PST Viper came in yesterday. Wow. It really is a pretty big step up from the Gen I.
The glass is better, its beefier, the turrets are better. Its freakin amazing for the money, just to be honest about it.
Now really is a great time to buy a quality scope!

The proof will be in how well you can shoot with it.
Get out there and burn some ammo.
I'm eager to hear how she does.

That's true, depends on well the scope and mounts can handle the recoil and stay zeroed.

The .300 WSM isn't exactly light on recoil, not exactly bad either like the full power .300 WM...

I used to have a .300 WM in a pretty light rifle and it had some serious recoil, mostly felt off the bench though, wasn't bad offhand... Sighting it in was pretty brutal off the bench....

Your .300 WSM won't be near that bad though. ;)

Heck, theres only 50fps difference between the 2. ( 300 WM VS 300 WSM )
They're pretty much the same
That scope will handle a 338 LM or a 50 Cal.
I know the scope will be fine.

I know the scope will be fine.

Most of those have active muzzle breaks and or recoil dampening systems that really work... Very low recoil...

I know because I shot them before...

You could shoot them all day long in a tee-shirt with no issue.

You would never be able to shoot a .50 Cal without a recoil dampening system.

The .338 LM is a freaking beast, lucky they also have the same...

Absolutely. 100% agree

I tell ya Jim, we all know the 50 Cal is the 50 Cal.
I've shot bothe 338 LM and 50 Cal
But, what I'm saying is you are absolutely right! That 338 LM is incredible!!
What I would LOVE to shoot someday is a 375 Cheytac or a 408 Cheytac. Those are nipping on the heels of a 50 Cal

They all are crazy long range rounds, the rifles cost a bit too as is to be expected, well the good ones do anyway.

If I owned a .50 Cal Rifle I would handload for it, that can make a large difference especially at long range.

It's also a heck of a lot cheaper per round too even with buying match grade bullets.
