Opinion of new Toyota Yaris

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Since I no longer have a motorcycle I am looking to buy my wife a small car I take over the other (older) car. We’ve been looking at the new Toyota Yaris since she likes hatchbacks. What do you all think of it?

I'm a big fan of Toyota, my mother had one of the older model Yaris and she was rear ended going 60mph while crossing the Ohio River and she bounced off both sides of the bridge and walked away. The car looked like it was rolled down a mountain. It still started and ran afterwards too.

That’s a good testimony. I want her to be safe. A car that can keep her safe in an accident is good. The new models have an airbag curtain and traction control. Another part of safety is reliability. The crime rate is high here so I don’t want her car to break down.

If it's a 2020 Yaris hatch it may be a rebadged Mazda 2. I'd look pretty hard at a Honda Fit as an alternative. The Kia Soul also has a more upright seating position so it might be easier for her to get in and out of. The Soul is kind of a just right taller than a regular hatch, but not so tall you have to climb into it like most SUVs.

Thanks. I’ll look and see if it’s sold anywhere. The Yaris is at least 15 years old now. It’s not a new model. There is no comparison with the Hondas in this range as far as features and safety go.

Hey Doc, we bought a new Yaris for beloved wife in 2009.

The little vehicle has done close to 180,000km and hasn’t missed a beat. From memory the only major parts that required replacing were the coil packs that fire spark plugs and the water pump.

I reckon they’re great little vehicles that cost next to nothing to run and I’d have no reservations in driving one myself. :)

Personally i have a slight problem with Toyotas IMO funky looks, but that put aside, people i know are generally happy with theirs.
I have become a KIA/Huyndai-guy myself, (I drive a 2019 Niro a.t.m.) at least in Sweden i feel they offer more bang for the buck than Toyota..
If conderned with safety, check EURO NCAP score online. As for mechanical reliability there shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, I bought her a Hyundai when we were back home but in SEA they cost as much as a house...taxes and things I’d better not mention.

Just know that the 2019 Yaris hatchback is a France production vehicle.......if that means anything to you?? Without a VIN# and looking at my EPC right now it looks like there's no 2020 hatchback model, 2019 must be the last production run?

Per my catalogs......

2019 hatchback is a French produced car.
2018 (last year) Yaris IA is a North American produced car (NAP).
2020 Yaris sedan is also a NAP.

Personally, NOT buying a car manufactured in France!! But that's just me........I get to pick and choose, the last 6 Toyota's we've owned were true (JAP) produced cars (VIN starts with a J) and manufactured in Japan!

SEA? It's kinda funny how prices swing wildly worldwide. We rented a Ford F150 on our Colorado trip last month, that truck would cost 40-50000 $ and cost an arm and a leg in tax. Also in Sweden, Huyndai/KIA are generally cheaper than Toyota and have way better warranty. Go figure.. :)

No experience with the Toyota Yaris, but I bought my oldest son a used 2007 Toyota Matrix(basically a Corolla) with 110k miles on it. He drove it for 2 years of High School and he's now 4 hours away in college. Currently it has 140k + miles on it. Only major thing we have done to it is replace a faulty cooling fan connection for when the AC comes on. Otherwise we've just changed the oil ourselves (quality synthetic oil) and regular tune-ups. I have my fingers crossed it lasts him long enough so the next car will be on his dime.

Toyota makes a good car. You can find some great deals on used Corollas from the early to mid 2000 time frame. I paid $5k out the door for my son's car.

Yaris is made in Japan and assembled in various countries now.

Well technically that's right and wrong. According the Southeast Toyota (SET) parts for the Yaris are sourced from Japan, France, and Turkey. We have a 2015 Yaris 5door hatchback in our shop right now having a rear bumper put on, VIN# starts with a "V" so it's built in France.

I just went and looked at two different 2020 Yaris 5door hatchbacks on our lot, VIN# starts with a "3", they're built in Salamanca, Guanajuato Mexico. The 2020 hatchbacks are really a Mazda 2 subcompact, they're built in the Mazda plant in Salamanca, Mexico.

All the earlier Yaris models up to 2013/14 were all made / assembled in Japan.

4Runners are the poor man's Land Cruiser, made in Japan at the same plant.

These things can run forever if you change the oil.

Good deals on 2019 models WITHOUT all the safety radar tech. 2020 models HAVE the safety tech and Apple Car Play, so the dealers probably are having a hard time selling the 2019's. Costco has an auto buying program that will save you some money and the dealer's have $1500 back until Nov 4 IIRC. (Might increase in November)

If you're not a fan of the car's computer playing with your brakes and steering, it might be a good choice. (Software always works perfectly, right ?)

Port injection engine that doesn't build up crud on your valves like direct injection... just an added bonus.

We drove the latest Yaris today. It has 360* cameras, even overhead, keyless entry and start, folding mirrors, blind side warning, traction control, air bag curtain, and drives nice. It is more comfortable than the competing Hondas, Nissans,Mazda’s, and Small Fords.

The thing with new cars, specially body style changes is that they aren’t old enough to know pattern/trend failures. I had a 2010 Yaris for a while and it was a great gas saver since I normally DD a tundra. All the ones I’ve seen have been great cars, no major issues. They are small, simple, no frills vehicles. Although they have come a long way! They used to be super basic!
This style of vehicle is what made Toyota famous back in the 80’s in the states, they do small cars and 4 cylinders really well.

Source: I work on Toyota’s every single day. I’ve been a Toyota specialist for over a decade. I went to school through Toyota/Lexus as well. The shop I’ve been at for the last 6-7 years specializes in Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus vehicles.

This new model is a far cry from the older versions. It’s not a no frill car. The only thing it does not have is power seats. Like the Celica and Corolla before, they keep upgrading until the car is mor luxury car and the cost soars.

I forgot to mention this car also has front and rear cameras with recorders, plus tinted security windows.
