Hey, Naperville:

Thank you for your post and for refreshing this thread.

The research for Contemporary Knife Targeting was done by Chris Grosz, a police officer in Littleton, CO and a master instructor in PPCT's Spontaneous Knife Defense system--a law enforcement counter-knife program. Although PPCT did a great job of citing modern scientific studies in much of its work, their knife-defense stuff still cited Fairbairn's Timetable of Death. Chris disagreed with this, asked me my opinion of the Fairbairn stuff, and, with the help of the Denver Medical Examiner, disproved Fairbairn's stuff and created a modern, medically accurate version.

Chris did all the work in gathering the data, but needed help to present it in written form, so he asked me to help. I wrote the "white paper" that he sent to PPCT, urging them to update their courseware. I also suggested we present the information to a broader audience, so Chris and I agreed to co-author the book for Paladin Press. Shortly after we signed the contract with Paladin, Chris tragically passed away, leaving his wife, daughter, and second (then-unborn) child. I asked that Paladin modify the contract and I signed all royalties over to Chris' widow. I then completed the book in honor of his memory.

When Paladin closed a couple of years ago, all copyright rights reverted to the authors. I contacted Chris' widow and asked about the possibility of bringing the book back into print--as I had done with "Bullseyes Don't Shoot Back" and Col. Rex Applegate's widow. Unfortunately, Chris' widow involved an attorney and things quickly got far more complicated than they needed to be. Since she owns half the rights to the book, I cannot--and will not-- republish it without her permission.

On a more positive note, the key message of the book--which is that Fairbairn's Timetable was never medically valid and that exsanguination is an inefficient way of stopping a lethal threat--have been well documented in many articles I've written since the book was published. Most recently this one: http://knife-gear.com/blood-loss-and-stopping-power/.

Stay safe,

Mike

That's just heartbreaking 💔 that she brought in an attorney. Especially after the kindness that you showed after her late husband's passing.

Wow... well readers of this forum now have some facts as to why they cannot get this book. Hopefully things change for the better in the future and all parties come together over the loss of Chris Grosz and find a way to republish. It is a fantastic little book.

Hello, I do Kali Pekiti Tirsia and Silat.
Because of the COVID situation I try to train at home (I'm on Pekiti University Silver and Gold). Also tried SAMI combative system.
I'm trying to discover different kali and silat schools and way of training. I've already ordered the seminar 'FCS Gathering March 2020 Tarpon Springs' and 'Principles of the Kerambit' and I liked Ray's way of teaching.
I hesitate to take either the complete curriculum of Taboada Balintawak or the one from FCS.
Wich one do you recommend as I cannot afford both.

Thanks

Taboada Balintawak is the art of corto. It is an "in your face" art. You are their toe to toe and trying to defeat an armed opponent. It is good to learn this no matter what other mid to long range art you study.

I tried Pekiti University for a while. I really like Kali Pekiti Tirsia for the ranging footwork. I have all of the DVDs for Pekiti Tirsia - SMF too. The only issue that I had at the time was I lost my car, the engine went out and I needed $5,000+ for a new engine from GM and to pay to have it put in. The money would have been no problem but I was out of work due to a mild heart attack and open heart surgery. So, I was S.O.L. and could not practice with a group or two near me teaching the same material as Pekiti University.

Ray Dionaldo's Kerambit is really good isn't it! He has really mastered not just the Kerambit but edged weapons. His short knife and bolo are awesome too. I'd love to meet him and do a seminar. Seems like a nice guy too. He is getting older though so some of his flexibility will be falling off. I have the complete curriculum of FCS, and I have to say if you are already studying Pekiti Tersia, study the Balintawak!

The Balintawak DVDs are next on my list to purchase. I do not have them but they are a must have item if you want to study the distance of corto. DO THE BALINTAWAK!!!!

I did not continue to update the initial post in this thread but I have several other arts in my DVD collection now. The one set that stands head and shoulders above all of them is the GM Darren Tibon series. All that I can say is WOW! It is really good. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to slow it down and give more verbal instruction, but the DVD set is unreal, very well done.

If you can, no matter what you practice, get with a team of people to work out. YOU NEED FEEDBACK on what works, and what and how to do these moves! Some things are practical and work, others not so much. You need feedback to see what works for you and for that you need at least one other person to train with 2 to 4 times per week. Train slowly and don't hurt anyone and keep them around, they are like gold.

Thanks for the post to the thread, and may you have great luck in studying Kalis, Escrima and Arnis at all the ranges!!!

This week I purchased 12 DVD GM Darren Tibon series(Cabales System), and the Libre Knife Fighting series. I'll have a solid foundation on the Cabales System or Serrada Escrima.

I have other DVDs and probably 250 more download videos but posting all of the titles would be insane.

Dear Naperville and Jim:

Thank you both for sharing your backgrounds and insights. Naperville, thank you for the kind words regarding my videos. I'm glad the logic comes through and resonates with you.

FYI, MBC does have representation in Chicagoland. If you're interested in doing any hands-on training in it, you can check out the Instructor Locator on my web site and see which instructors might be accessible to you.

I'm sorry to hear you had a heart attack and commend you for continuing your training. I wish you all the best.

Stay safe,

Mike
Just purchased MBC titles:
- Counter-Gun Concepts (CGC)
- Counter Blade Concepts: Realistic Empty-Hand Tactics Against Edged-Weapon Attacks (PALADIN PRESS)

Here is the link to Michael Janich's MBC site:

My only wish is that there was an option to pay for DVDs. I'd love to add these to my physical library and will purchase the DVDs if they ever become available.

So far so good. Watching "Counter Blade Concepts: Realistic Empty-Hand Tactics Against Edged-Weapon Attacks," which I can never get enough of!

Hey, Naperville:

Thank you for the kind words. FYI, the Paladin-era Counter-Blade Concepts video is outdated. The CBC system has evolved a lot and the current CBC video is much better.

As for DVDs, they used to be available when Stay Safe Media was active. Mike Rigg retired Stay Safe somewhat unexpectedly a couple of years ago and with it went my ability to produce and distribute DVDs on a small-scale level. I will keep trying to bring them back, but have to find an appropriate source.

Stay safe,

Mike

Sorry for the late reply, Kristi is working with connectivity issues that I am having.

The Paladin-era Counter-Blade Concepts video may be "outdated" but I found quite a bit of solid logic within the videos. I'll buy the updated version....unless I have it upstairs in my "lair." I don't recall seeing it.
