Grid Down: EMP or Natural Event

Postby Naperville » Sun Jun 02, 2019 6:39 pm

How many of you have a few months worth of food and water available for a grid down situation. An electrical grid down situation has been studied by the US Govt, and they are making plans for just such a situation. Are any of you preparing?

This video sums up what I'm thinking. Let me know what you think.

The possibility of an EMP attack are very real but yet very few people even bother to learn about or even check out. First off you would have massive, horrible withdrawal symptoms of all these cell phone addicts. I've thought for a long time if a rogue state like North Korea or any other country that hates the USA would more than likely try an attack like that rather than launch nuclear weapons. If our electrical grid went down for 2 to 4 months it would create a very dangerous situation to where panic and looting would become a very big problem.

If a massive successful EMP attack were to be launched against the USA it could in effect shut down most of the country for a minimum of at least a month or so but I'm sure it would probably be longer than that.

I'm a big believer and a student of survival and prepping but the one really big problem would be the absolute lawlessness that would take place in probably less than a week or two. It's truly one of those possibilities that gives me the creeps. So many people I know that have diabetes or other ailments where they take maintenance medications really worries me greatly as I do believe it would cause the morgues to overflow. And with no refrigeration it would be an apocolyptic nightmare.

I've got enough meds for "maintenance" needs for approximately a year. But due to funds, we do not have more than a week or two of food here. If the grid went down, we'd be DOA in less than a month.

The EMP can be a natural disaster, it need not be due to a foreign adversary.

I plan to get in to prepping more when I get back to work. Whenever that happens to be. If they keep letting hundreds of thousands of H1Bs in, maybe never.

My cousin's friend works for a top executive of one of the top social media companies. Recently he was in a meeting where several key leaders expressed what was described to be much more that just a concern, but rather a key focus for not only the industry, but the world. Five long months into 2019 have passed and nary a custom or Sprint run Para 3 has been announced. It becomes increasingly difficult to push back the angry citizens that seem to become one with the mob each passing day.

Does Spyderco share some responsibility to the hundreds or possibly tens of thousands that might be massacred if there isn't some news of a Para 3 to appease the mob?

Many ask, are the steel companies part of the knife cartel that is controlling supply and driving up costs? I do not know, but I have heard Rumors which is a really excellent album, but also explains a bit about the overall issue in a way that some fail to follow.
Can you find it and can it cut?

If there was an EMP attack we would have even bigger worries than being without electricity... As far as natural overload of the electrical distribution system (huge solar flare) goes, AFAIK the distribution network has had disconnects to prevent or lessen system-wide damage built in for many years now, so the majority of people in the developed world would be without power for hours or days at the most.

anyway I like dry pasta and crackers with canned fish! ;)

Did I mention that ALL my knives have been upgraded to prevent any damage from EMPs?

Also, EMP's would be a bad thing but I've been through worse. If you want to protect vital electronic stuff build a cheap Faraday cage. Order a bunch of thick BBQ grade aluminum foil, wrap it around or wrap from within, set a couple earth grounds and you are good to go. For less than $500 you can probably wrap the entire inside of a mid-size house and still have leftover for BBQ.

I get it. Blade Forums is missing a troll.

Nationwide EMP from non natural causes will be part of a nuclear attack so much of us will have much more immediate problems. There will be no such thing as the Norks turning our lights off with one bomb. No terrorists either unless they somehow get Russia's launch codes.

On the other hand I have seen the effects of a person on (prozac type) meds who suddenly was cut off and that person became fairly difficult to get along with. My advice? Have something mind altering to keep them busy for a while. Even alcohol is better than nothing. Cannabis is better.

True story.

That is assuming a bullet to the head is out of the question.

NOPE. If an EMP hits due to a solar flare or a nuclear weapon high in the atmosphere, the power will be out for months. The entire electrical system will need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

The US Govt and DOD have spent tens of millions trying to get electrical utilities to harden their systems nationwide.

Right now only Great Britan, France, Russia, China and the US can for sure. India might be able to. It would take a bunch of largish bombs detonating in the right place and time in space just to cover the US. The US military is already more prepared than most think and they would be fine. There would be no planes falling, cars crashing and such. If you are near fencing or rail lines for instance, don't touch them. :)

There are other issues but they have been well known for a long, long time. The only issue with being prepared has come with the anti nuke type left that has controlled our government with the belief that "If we prepare for nuclear wars problems ( like the old civil defense of the post Cuban Missle Crisis) we will make people think it's survivable" . The truth is our society is made of people and people are more robust and intelligent than given credit for. We would rebuild and repair things within a short time. In some places days, in some a few weeks at most. Similar to large hurricanes but with much less damage to infrastructure and transportation which comes with huge storms.

Bloom Energy has an interesting approach to electrical power generation. They just need to get the cost down. Essentially local power generation. A lot of big companies use their technology.
