Destry vs Rambo

#1

Enjoying the Best War Movies thread got me considering what I thought of the actors in them.

Jimmy Stewart has been a lifelong favourite, and his combat war service cemented in my mind his that he must pretty much have been Destry from his Destry Rides Again, the quiet man who could certainly “walk the walk”.

Richard Todd, who starred in the epic The Longest Day about D-day, was one of the first paratroopers to land in Normandy, and in that film acted alongside another actor playing him in his wartime role!

But as a kid I was most enthralled by Audie Murphy - one of the most decorated combat soldiers of WW2.

I guess so many people were in uniform in WW2 you could (and probably should) make lists of war-hero doctors, war-hero welders etc.

Do their stories diminish the weight of those actors who didn’t serve, I wonder? I read somewhere that John Wayne was booed by wounded GI’s in the Pacific.
