This is what I came up with when I made the bases for Matt.

They're not as versatile as the original Sharpmaker but I did make a minor improvement (IMO) when I tightened up the slots a little so the stones don't flop around as much. Doing those angled slots in that shape was not as easy as it might seem. I also like how easy it is to adjust my CAD model to make bases with different angles. I've made a few now for friends who wanted special angles for their kitchen knives. I made one few nights ago for friend who wanted a second one to use at work

Very cool Sharpguy. Your's are definitely the nicest I've seen - I'd love to see something similar from Spyderco.Sharp Guy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:51 pm

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
these are brilliant! another project i'd like to see would be a tray that fits to the bottom of the current sharpmaker that will hold extra rods. has anyone done that already?Sharp Guy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:51 pmThis is what I came up with when I made the bases for Matt.

Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
I would buy both of those bases. We have asked Spyderco for this for years now as well as diamond rods with more grits. Not sure why they won’t make it happen?

I agree the Sharpmaker definitely needs more diamond grits.bearfacedkiller wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 7:50 amI would buy both of those bases. We have asked Spyderco for this for years now as well as diamond rods with more grits. Not sure why they won’t make it happen?
Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
There's actually one on Thingiverse that has triangle slots in the base to store stones. IIRC it's made with the standard (30°&40°) angles. I'm pretty sure by the time you both the medium and fine stones you might as well buy the whole kit from Spyderco. Their base does have some features that these others don't have. The crew at Spyderco did a solid job designing the 204.

Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
Ahh...gotcha! I Think we discussed that before. I started thinking about a version that slides on. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with something. My biggest issue right now is timeladybug93 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 11:36 ami meant a tray that fits on the original sharpmaker (which i have) to hold extra stones.Sharp Guy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 11:17 amThere's actually one on Thingiverse that has triangle slots in the base to store stones. Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
Agreed. I was going to buy the replacement stones but i got a better deal on a used Sharp-Maker kit.Sharp Guy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 11:17 amThere's actually one on Thingiverse that has triangle slots in the base to store stones. Subscribing to the thread. I'm thinking of picking up basic CAD skills, with a view to modify and eventually design knife handles and pen refill adapters
No actual printing will be involved for a long time, not at home at least - I'll just be using online 3D printing service once I have good enough files to use.

Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
I see a lot of miniatures and such on Shapeways, but the prices are insane--more than many production/ready-made small-scale models, and most of these 3D printed models require assembly and paint. The files to produce them are pretty inexpensive (and regularly free). So, what would be a good entry-level printer for this job?

I didn't read the article (I'll look when I get more time) but keep in mind top 12 is definitely subjective. Just like a list of the top 12 best folding knives would be subjective.Naperville wrote: ↑Mon Mar 21, 2022 10:30 pmA review of 3D Printers. Re: Anybody Else into 3D Printing?
A friend of mine is getting a semi-industrial model (his use in making replacement parts required use of fiber-reinforced nylon filament), so finally I have access to something a lot better than the $150 kit printers.
The first use is printing Mule Team scales. Need to finally get into understanding Autodesk.
