Pioneer X

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I just got a Victorinox Pioneer X. It has the same great tools the Soldier/Pioneer has always had, but adds a large pair of scissors. This is a great multi-tool with a practical tool set. It is sleek and not unwieldy like many multi-tools from other makers. I like that it is comfortable to hold and to use, and fills my hand in a comfortable manner.

Nice job Victorinox!

That's the one I had before I got the Pioneer X.

It really is a great multi-tool. The awl is very good, the main blade is perfect for apples (or any other cutting) as it is long enough and it is thin. The scissors are the main thing for me. It gives me great practical versatility. Another plus is that it fits in the watch pocket of my jeans instead of needing a sheath/pouch or taking up pocket room.

Quality with a capital “K” ....

On the Pioneer, if only the steel were better! Cedric & Astra did a YT test on the new Vic Hunter in the same steel, and a vg10 Endura just blew it away.

The Pioneer X would be an even better tool if the succors would have the same direction as on all other SAKs. I always struggle with it due to my muscle and brain memory ... :o

This knife does not have a "super steel" blade. It does not need one. It is a knife that is practical and easy to maintain. Literally a couple of swipes on a car window, or coffee mug, or a sharpener will bring it back to screaming sharpness. The ffg and thinness of the blade will keep it cutting long after the blade is dull on some materials. Here is a J. Davis cutting test: https://youtu.be/peO0akVMNbg

The tool set makes this an eminently practical pocket accessory.

Mediocre steel but it has a good blade shape and great geometry. SAKs do cut well and at least they touch up easy. With a pocket stone in my pocket I can have a SAK shaving again in a few seconds.

The Pioneer X looks like a winner to me. I love SAKs.

Just the other day we were shooting some videos and had to put the camera on the stand. It used a large screw we could not get tight enough with hand strength. So. I pop out my SAK (SAT) and open the large screw driver, and problem solved.
