Traditional EDC fixed blades
Traditional EDC fixed blades
I'm looking for suggestions for traditional EDC fixed blades.
I like green and black micarta, carbon steels (though SS isn't a deal breaker), and handles that offer a four finger grip for XL-XXL hands. OAL under 9". Under $200, as these will be used hard. Lighter the better, most my EDC FB's are under 4oz without sheath but I don't have a hard limit in mind.
Here is the one I carried the past few days, an L T Wright Frontier Valley. I like it enough I'm poking around for a second. Tough to find them without sharpening notches or lanyard holes though....
I really like it for food prep. Thin and efficient grind in a steel that takes a screaming edge.
Handle is just barely big enough. I often switch to a three finger grip with my pinky resting on the pommel when I want a bit more reach. Comfortable in either grip, though a slightly taller handle would be better.
Any suggestions? Someone here recently posted the Moki BANFF, and a while back another member here poated about the GEC fixed blades. They had a few models that caught my eye. What else should I consider?

Give the Moki and GEC a shot and tell me what you think.
I heard the Helles are good but most have Scandi grinds.

I'll probably pick up one of those Moki knives next month or tax return time. Unless I grab the Arno Benard Bush Baby Galago or Gecko.
Also, check out Arno Benard's knives. Many are exoensive but they def make ones around $120-$140. They're supposed to be quite nice. Most are n690, I believe. The bush babbies are probably too small for you.

How do feel about convex grinds mate? Or Bark River Knives in general? Ive got 3 and they are very well done.
They are pricey but they offer a good range of models, steels and handle materials. Their sheaths are a step up from LT’s as well.

You're hurtin me here. :o Just had to show the link to the Horsewright knives. I've been looking at them for a long time. The Arno knives are well done and as you probably already know DLT is handling some of his models now. I have the Arno Fin and Feather, a very nice knife, he has a number of beautiful designs. Arizona Custom lists some. Passed on a real nice Allen Warren B&T on BF recently. You may have pushed me over the fence with this link. :pExtra330SC wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 1:37 amI've really been into all kinds of fixed blades lately. ...especially smaller easier to carry knives! Re: Traditional EDC fixed blades
I've always been attracted to BRK and convex grinds are no issue for me, but their prices are just a bit higher than what I like to pay, especially when you factor in having to buy or build a kydex sheath. I'm weird in that while I like a traditional blade, I don't like a traditional sheath.
Re: Traditional EDC fixed blades
I'm going to take a look at these links and Arno Benard. Thanks guys! If I find something that catches my eyes I'll share it in my next post in the thread.Extra330SC wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 1:37 amI've really been into all kinds of fixed blades lately. ...especially smaller easier to carry knives! Re: Traditional EDC fixed blades
I hear you on the sheath dilemna. I prefer kydex too and have passed on many knives due to crap sheaths. I’ve been meaning to tool up on kydex making gear but at this stage it’s another hobby and expense I just don’t need.Vivi wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 11:19 amI've always been attracted to BRK and convex grinds are no issue for me, but their prices are just a bit higher than what I like to pay, especially when you factor in having to buy or build a kydex sheath. It's on my list ...perfect size IMO! I was trying to send links with the price and materials you mentioned in play. I'm not a member at BF ...but when I've been researching small fixed blades...threads from Blade Forums have been the most informative.Vivi wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 1:10 pmWell the Lapwing has my attention. This link is just for fun! The price on these Loveless knives are crazy...but just beautiful work. If you haven’t already seen these I thought you'd enjoy http://lovelessknifecollector.com/rw-loveless-knives/
The Horsewright knives are amazing and seem to be a real VALUE for the cost. I just can't decide on which one I want... :confused:Tdog wrote:You're hurtin me here. :o Just had to show the link to the Horsewright knives. I've been looking at them for a long time.
