You lost all of your knives. Which 10 do you buy first?
You lost all of your knives. Which 10 do you buy first?
Your entire knife collection was lost/stolen/destroyed in a fire. Even the EDC knife in your pocket!
Luckily insurance has you covered. You have a fresh slate, and a blank check to buy whichever 10 knives you want.
What do you buy? Why?
Out of production knives are fine, let's assume you got lucky on ebay.
Here's my ten, in no particular order.
- Victorinox 10" Chef Knife. This is my go to for food prep.
- Leatherman Micra. Favorite EDC multitool. It's been a part of my EDC longer than any other item.
- Leatherman Rebar (black). My favorite full sized multitool I've tried.
- Spyderco Pacific Salt SE. It's a Pacific Salt, what else is there to say. Could go PE or SE, chose SE for edge holding + variety.
- Spyderco Police 4. Go to folder when being rust proof or saving an ounce isn't a concern.
- Scrapyard Dogfather. I like the overmolded handle for shock absorption, and you can't beat S7 for a chopper IMO.
- ESEE Izula 2. This is my favorite EDC sized fixed blade.
- Landi EDC. A2 full flat grind blade with contoured micarta scales. Offers another inch of blade over the Izula 2, good work horse fixed blade.
- Tromontina 24" machete with synthetic handle. No nonsense bush clearing.
- Gransfors American Felling Axe. Everyone needs a good two handed axe. Currently I own a Fiskars, but if I were to splurge, GB it is.

A chef's knife - usable, if cumbersome for every task in the kitchen
A Delica - really all you/i need as every day carry pocket knife
Eight Kopas- the remaining eight to follow :P :)

KO5 PE Small Utility, K08 Santoku, Stretch II, and a Piranha Excalibur, then haunt eBay for a couple jigged bone or red bone Kiwls to carry and a VG-10 FRN Stretch and original SS Stretch to mod and carrry.

Autonomy
Sliverax
Military (52100 if possible, M4 as second choice)
Dragonfly Salt SE
Manix 2 (hard to say since mine is custom, some version in G10)
The rest I'm having a hard time thinking about which says a lot about the others in my collection. I think it's time I sell some off.

M390 PM2
Esee 6
Leatherman Charge TTI
Council Tools Bad Boys Axe
Spyderco Santoku
Another paring knife from Luong La
Swiss Army knife with extra tweezers and toothpicks
Merkur 34C with 1000 blades
A good pair of shears.
600 grit diafold takes the place of a knife
That's all I'd need
Would probably need a 1" hand drill and a planer too but...

Dexter Russell Chinese Cleaver
Dexter Russell Connoisseur Paring Knife
Cruwear Military
Maxamet Native5 LW
Rapala Fillet Knife
Becker BK9
Bark River Wilderness Explorer
Mora Companion Carbon Steel
Victorinox Craftsman
Original Leatherman Wave
I left out axes. I heat with wood and without my Stihl, my Fiskars Super Splitter and my Husqvarna hatchet I wouldn’t survive winter. I suppose I could make kindling with the BK9 but I would rather use the hatchet.

Bloke! I didn’t know you liked big knives. You like that Junglas, huh? I don’t have one but have used one quite a bit and it is a sweet blade. I have a handful of knives in that size range and love them, especially the BK9. I keep hoping Spyderco will make a chopper in that size range at a lower price point than the darn dao.

Re: You lost all of your knives. Which 10 do you buy first?
Kitchen knives (for food):
largeish santoku, maybe Spyderco's, maybe not
smallish kitchen knife (~4in blade)
long serrated bread knife
Nostalgia knives (because these were my first Spydies and I'm still fond of them even if I don't carry them much anymore):
Spyderco Native 5 blackout serrated
Spyderco Native 5 blackout plainedge
Car knives (keep in car in case of emergency):
Byrd Cara Cara 2 Rescue orange serrated
some long plainedge fixed-blade thing (fullsize tanto blackout KA-BAR or Benchmade Protagonist, maybe)
Awesome EDC knives (for awesomeness and EDC):
Spyderco Rescue, old ATS-55 version
a second ATS-55 Rescue as a backup in case of losing the first one
Spyderco Endura 3 plainedge

Re: You lost all of your knives. Which 10 do you buy first?
1) Spyderco Delica 4 FFG
2) Benchmade Bugout
3) Emerson CQC-7 of some variation
4) Victorinox Walker/Lumberjack
5) Victorinox Compact
6) Jones Brother Puukko
7) Fiddleback Hiking Buddy
8) Mora 510
9) Condor Australian Army Machete
10) Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe
That would be a good start at replacing the knives I use the most on a day to day basic from work to the woods.
