Who are you talking to?

Well, if the enemy is wearing Kevlar armor you might be in trouble

One big enough to hide behind until you can find a better hiding place.

Definitely a smatchet, preferably made by Cold Steel so you can defend yourself against marauding boots full of meat.

A machete. At least that way you will have a useful tool.

The aforementuoned smatchet combined with the below stand-off tool by Jörg Spräve would be a practical duo for your scenario.
Remember; two is one, one is none.

Laser sword/lightsaber
lightweight, compact, concealable, always sharp, melts metal and steel, cuts flesh, bone and mutated creatures alike, goes through plastic and kevlar, leather and mail,
provides light and heat in cold lonely post-apocalyptic nights,
can't rust, can't snap,
its light and sound can scare and deter the fiercest of the Wasteland's wild creatures, :o
one handed so it can to be paired with a shield, weapon, gun or object :p
requires virtually no strength, sharpness or inertia to be effective :spyder:

I'm assuming you're untrained. If so your best sword is this:

Re: Which sword would be best for modern wars or a modern day fallout scenario?
If we're to believe the experience of fighting in the trenches of WW1 and the ruined cities of WW2, both German assault groups and Soviet shock sappers agree that the best sword for modern conflicts is ... a sharpened infantry shovel!
The positive points cited in All Quiet on the Western Front and the memories of Stalingrad veterans are the fact that the wide and thick blade doesn't bend easily even if you hit something hard, that it doesn't get stuck like bayonets, that it gives you a better striking range than a knife, and that a well sharpened one can sever a limb in one sharp move. Of course, I don't see it going through kevlar body armor, but you can still be successful by hitting articulations.
However, two things haven't changed since WW1 : the best melee weapon is a shotgun (or, better, a good artillery preparation), and if you're using an edged weapon in post-pike and shot warfare, it means that everything went wrong for both yourself and your commanding officers!
