Which sword would be best for modern wars or a modern day fallout scenario?

I actually really like the smatchett design. I'd love to find a custom maker who would do one for me in v4e.

Would be nice to have a custom smatchet.
Anders Högstöm offers his version as does Steve Voorhis.
McDonald Armories sells a smatchet looking close to the WWII version (dont know the products from this company).
You could buy a Böker smatchet to tide you over
:)

Either a smatchet, a barong, or a Howard Clark L-6 Bainite.
I'm just finishing up a set of 20" chisakatana - one in 1075 and the other in EIPS wire rope damascus. I tend to find that FMA-sword sized japanese-style swords are the best mix of fun and utility in cutting performance. Sinawali with slicers is a ton of fun.

There are those modern Gladius short swords now being made and knife versions, inspired by the ancient Roman Gladius.

For the OP's question, the best sword for modern wars would be one that could cut through armor plate and heavy Kevlar, which swords can't. The reason you don't see swords being used a lot in modern war is because there are a whole lot more better options.
A machete or smatchet would make a fine tool or emergency weapon, but in the event of a modern war you better have something more effective than a sword with you.

I forged some wire rope damascus a few years back and listened to a mate who reckoned it would harden and I s’pose it did to 45HRC. Ah, hahaha!

You have to get that EIPS (extra-improved plow steel). It's 1095, and hardens, as well as takes a hamon. I get mine up to 58-60 Rockwell. Also, get it bright. Galvanization will mess up your lungs.

I was around 15 years old and bought this from an oriental store in a local mall in the late 90's...imagine that happening these days. NOPE!
