WSGSS stroping technique

#1

Post by bacmapei »

I purchased a Work Sharp guided sharpener and have a question about the leather strop. Does it work better with fresh jelly and compound each use or can the leather be used "dry" if still impregnated with compound from previous use?

I always use them dry.
I use only the smooth side of the leather.
And I also use leather without compound.

I don’t own a Work Sharp but I’m of the impression that any type of oil based paste/gel (if that is indeed the case of the jelly you refer to) on a leather strop would compromise the integrity of the leather, make it spongy and impossible to clean. Whereas a dry compound can be brushed off and reapplied when it glazed.
