How much sharpening gear do YOU own???

#1

Post by OldHoosier62 »

I'm Jim, and I'm a "sharp-o-holic"....honestly, I own a ridiculous amount of sharpening gear.

A sample-

2- Sharpmakers with all extra stones
3- 1x30 belt grinders
1- 3x36 belt grinder
1- 2x72 belt grinder
2- 10 inch Wet grinders
1- Edge-Pro
2- Lansky sets
1- Gerstner machinists tool box FULL of stones of all shapes/sizes/grits

And a whole bunch more....

Some of this comes from sharpening stuff as a business, but the accumulation has achieved "almost" hoarder proportions.  :D

So...fess up...who else has this "problem"?????

The only problem I'll admit to is that my accumulated tools--a variety of bench/pocket stones/diamond plates and homemade strops (I learned to sharpen old-school), as well as a Lansky set and a SharpMaker (still don't have the CBN rods that Cliff raves about)--don't include an Edge Pro or Wicked Edge. But Christmas is coming... Then, I won't have a problem. :)

I have a bit of sharpening gear...

Sharpmaker with CBN and XF rods added

(all synthetic water stones are large bench sized, approx. 8x2" +/-)
150 grit Naniwa Omura
1000 grit "red brick"
1000 grit King
1000/6000 grit King
2000 grit Naniwa "green brick"
5000 grit Suehiro Rika

140/800 grit small tool hone (x2)

Amakusa medium grit Jnat
Japan Woodworker finishing Jnat
330Mate nameless finishing koppa Jnat

6000 grit synthetic and natural chalk Naguras

Naniwa sink bridge

Finnish pocket stone

Dia Sharp 8x3" coarse

EZE Lap 6x2" extra fine (x2)

EZE Lap 4x1" fine (x2)

Spyderco 8x2" medium, fine and extra fine

Assorted Arkansas stones (Queer Creek, Soft, Hard, Translucent)

Nameless thin double-sided Medium/Fine diamond stone

3x36" belt grinder with 80 and 100 grit belts

DMT folding, round tapered diamond file (fine)

Nameless commercial round tapered diamond file (medium) (x2)

Numerous high quality bastard and second cut files

A disused German Tormek clone

......

oh yeah, I also have a Norton tri-hone stone holder, but the coarse and medium stones are saddled out and the mineral oil bath is just a mess anyway, plus fine India is the only stone in the set worth using IMO.

......

forgot the strop too! I have a wooden base with pigskin glued on, from Herb Dunkle and the Yellow Stone compound to go with it.

Well I've owned enough over my lifetime for about 5 lifetimes but right now all I have is:

An old cheap Smith's sharpener which is like a budget Lansky.

A Lansky with a bunch of extra stones, probably around $200 in crap.

A Sharpmaker with diamond and super fine rods.

And an Edge Pro with a bunch of Shapton Glass stones, Atoma diamond plates, and the whole set of Congress Moldmaster stones.

Since getting the Sharpmaker and getting good with it, it's all I use for maintenance. The EP gets called into action for any reprofiling work and to polish bevels when I'm feeling saucy lol.

not that much

Edge pro Apex with all of the stones/tapes from 120 to 3000 grit (not the diamond stone/tape though)
extra edge pro blanks with Balsa and BRKT green or Mothers mag

Sharp maker with ultra fine stones

cheap set of diamond plates that i use for rapidly reprofiling in the edge pro

coarse and extra fine credit card sized DMT plates

Ezelap diamond plate

Spyderco 1x6"ish doublestuff

profile set (the long ones, coarse and fine)

Ezelap diamond steel

cheap ikea ceramic steel

sheet of glass with various grades of Wet/Dry paper stuck too it for sharpening chisels/plane irons

a cheap oilstone for rapid reprofiling/repair on chisels/plane irons

Lansky (coarse, medium, fine, and the bench pin for the clamp)

Smiths kit (similar to the lansky, but junk)

BRKT strop with green and black compounds.

writing it all down and thinking about it - there is quite a bit there....

Not much really:

Edge Pro Apex with all the stones they offer plus Atoma diamond plates, and about another half dozen various stones from other makers.

Sharp maker of course with diamond rods.

A few strops.

Sharpmaker - Reserved tor SE blades and thus rarely ever used
4 DMT Diamond Stones XF F C XC - Fine and Coarse are the most frequently used, the two Xtras only rarely.
Small white hard Arkansas stone - 60+ years old and still my favorite for X-Acto blades
Norton Carborundum stone on a handle - for lawnmower blades, 50+ years old

Not much here. I just don't need much at this point.

A 25+ year old Sharpmaker with extra rods
A couple small bench stones in various grits
2 DMT diamond stones

Here's my sharpener of choice. It has pretty much everything I need to get a good edge on all of my knives.
