But I just use an old beard trimmer.

That's Pinky. He's a 20lb Norwegian Forest Cat. His fur is so long and dense we would have to hire someone to brush him for 8 hours a day to prevent it from matting up, and he's so big and has so much fur he can't groom himself well enough to keep it in check so after a few months we just shave him. He actually loves it, once it's over with anyway. He puts up a little fight but for the most part he's pretty passive and lets you do it, I think because he knows how good he feels afterwards. There's a noticeable difference in his behavior after he's shaved, he's more active and way more playful.

Cats are very good at hiding their discomfort and I know having dreadlocks close to your skin and pulling all the time must suck and it probably itches like crazy and he can't scratch it. This time I made it out with only one minor scratch on my right forearm but u literally have scars from doing this. But, he's like one of my kids, we've had him for 11 years.

The other option is what I use on Kiwi, our cat. She's small & doesn't like having her fur shaved at all. It's an ordeal for both of us to be locked in the bathroom, but she gets hair wads & the fur on her backside grows enough that if it gets too long, she gets one hung "in the breach" so to speak, a definite drag & unsanitary. I use a large "binder clip" on the back of her neck to paralyze her & keep her from scratching & biting. Here's an after shot. She's not really very happy right after the trim, but it's necessary.....

I've tried that binder clip thing after watching the video but neither of my cats really respond to it. I think I need something more like a woodworking clamp lol.

As a long time cat owner (who had to put down two recently) this puts a smile on my face. I have never had to do this, really never even thought of doing it. I had a cat a long time ago that would have literally killed me if I tried this.

You are brave folks. I am going to look up that binder clip trick.
