In my hand right now is Nabokov's Lance. I'd never heard of or read his works, and it's very engaging.
Not a Police (the band) fan, then?
I know their obvious hits, otherwise not in the slightest, why ?
They had a well known song with a Nabokov reference.

A great non-fiction writer. Turned into the best read of the year so far. Better than Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded.

I picked up a book off of Amazon named Notes On The Nature Of The Church: The Church by Augustine Thomas. Pretty good read, so far.

The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins.

I have read a lot of investment and finance books, and this is, in my opinion, the best one written to date.

Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Life of ‘Mama’ Cass Elliot, by Eddi Fiegel.

Very well-written and well-researched biography of an interesting individual, and a fascinating time period in the music industry (early 1960s to early 1970s).

I have been slowly working my way through this well balanced book. It shows America, warts and wonderful things. This book was written in opposition to the Marxist book, A People's History of the United States, which is pure fiction.

Hunter S. Thompson's ****'s Angels.

The first chapter is an account of a notorious 1964 Labor Day weekend rally
and beach party by the club, a "wake" for a dead Angel.
Two local girls from Seaside got more than they bargained for.
The moral to the story is: Don't flirt with a ****'s Angel.

At that time, I was a senior at Seaside High School
and witnessed law enforcement shepherding the Angels out of town.

Altamont: The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, And The Inside Story Of Rock’s Darkest Day, by Joel Selvin (2017).

I’ve been slowly working my way through a bunch of books I acquired during lockdown last year and into earlier this year. It took me awhile to get around to this one, but it’s a great, thoroughly-researched account of the disastrous “free concert” held at the remote Altamont Speedway in December of 1969. Anyone who’s interested in rock history should read this one. I already didn’t like outlaw gangs, but I also came away from this book disliking The Rolling Stones, especially Mick Jagger. They were never among my favorite bands to begin with, and Mick has always been a piece of work. But after reading this, it only confirmed some of the things I’d heard about Mick for years.

OTOH, I gained a little more insight into the Grateful Dead.

A great read. I've read a bunch of his books this year; Pacific, Atlantic, The Professor and the Madman, Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded, A Crack in the Edge of the World, The Map That Changed the World, Korea: A Walk Through the Land of Miracles, The Man Who Loved China, Collision of the World's Superpowers, and Land: How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World.

Thanks for this. For some reason I hadn't come across him. I just ordered The Perfectionists; The Professor...; Korea...

I look forward to all of them!
So it goes.

Ive been reading American Sniper by Chris Kyle. This book is so good! I didnt know a whole lot about the Navy Seals before I started reading it. I now have an even greater respect for our armed forces.
