I’m Scots-Irish, born in Northern Ireland, and a proud American patriot. I’m drinking rye, since it’s Independence Day weekend.

••••••

The Scots-Irish immigrants that had arrived in the 1600 and 1700s were having trouble adapting barley for their whisky to the climate in Maryland and Pennsylvania, so they grew rye.

When the British blockaded these shores during the lead-up to, and throughout the American War of Independence, no more rum was available for purchase or to drink.

Thus rye whiskey became America’s original native spirit, out of necessity. George Washington distilled it at Mount Vernon. When it was completed, his was the largest distillery in the new country. His distillery generated about half of the income of the entire estate, producing up to 11,000 gallons per year.

Rye was our favorite national drink up until prohibition, when Maryland and Pennsylvania distilleries weren’t able to bounce back after 1933 like the Kentucky bourbon producers were. Rye is more expensive to grow, harvest, and distill.

Finally during WWII, American corn was subsidized, partially in order to feed starving Europeans. So corn was even cheaper and more readily available, while rye grain was still expensive and hard to process for distillation.

That was the end of rye’s prominence as America’s national drink of choice.
Thank you, great read! I'm not a whisky drinker but do love a great beer! Although seasonal, I absolutely love and look forward to Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye IPA, it has that distinctive spicy pepper note rye in known for!

OK.... I'm working on getting LIT!

I'm drinking a mixed drink of Malibu Rum (21 proof coconut rum), with orange juice and cranberry juice.

Then I'll start on Lagunitas IPA and other mixed drinks(more rum at 80 proof and coke).

Then.....when I get toasted, I'll lovingly handle my knife collection. I cannot figure it out....I'm a relatively poor man, maybe that is why knives are the best deal in the world!

Ha! For some reason I find myself fiddling around with them or sharpening them more often after I have a few drinks, than when I'm sober. Glad I'm not the only one!

2nd Amendment weapons!!!! They simply rock.

You get to think about what the materials are and try and figure out what the designer was thinking, and how you're going to use it.

It's a good thing that I don't have a Knight's uniform!!!! Hahahahahaha....

What I've discovered is that Spyderco needs to make a Tops Pig Sticker in S45VN. Who knew that alcohol was so enlightening.
