It was cold and rainy last night so good glass of red wine in front of the fire was the right answer.

Took a drive out to the farm this morning to replace the one I opened last night, the joys of living in wine country.

I’m Scots-Irish, born in Northern Ireland, and a proud American patriot. I’m drinking rye, since it’s Independence Day weekend.

••••••

The Scots-Irish immigrants that had arrived in the 1600 and 1700s were having trouble adapting barley for their whisky to the climate in Maryland and Pennsylvania, so they grew rye.

When the British blockaded these shores during the lead-up to, and throughout the American War of Independence, no more rum was available for purchase or to drink.

Thus rye whiskey became America’s original native spirit, out of necessity. George Washington distilled it at Mount Vernon. When it was completed, his was the largest distillery in the new country. His distillery generated about half of the income of the entire estate, producing up to 11,000 gallons per year.

Rye was our favorite national drink up until prohibition, when Maryland and Pennsylvania distilleries weren’t able to bounce back after 1933 like the Kentucky bourbon producers were. Rye is more expensive to grow, harvest, and distill.

Finally during WWII, American corn was subsidized, partially in order to feed starving Europeans. So corn was even cheaper and more readily available, while rye grain was still expensive and hard to process for distillation.

That was the end of rye’s prominence as America’s national drink of choice.

Thanks for the interesting history lesson on Rye Whiskey in the US, SleeplessInSoCal.

I've spent time travelling around 'Norn Iron' and very much enjoyed the stunning landscapes and generous and hospitable people. :)

A Yank visited Ireland, and ventured north of Dublin? Apart from the Game of Thrones fans, that makes about ten of you!

It’s very rewarding for those who do, I agree. The Glens of Antrim, Dunluce Castle, Carrick-A-Rede, Bushmills... There’s tons of history and beauty, and great, fun people as well. The pub culture is unrivaled.

I actually spent about a month exploring the North, compared to a week in Dublin! But then, I’m an Aussie and we like to do things upside down!

Yeah I agree, the best pubs and best craic were in Belfast, for sure. I spent many happy hours in them.

I loved hiking round the Glens of Antrim:

Somewhere here I have a pic of my K390 Pingo in front of the sign for La Salle Drive in Belfast, but I can’t find it at the moment.
