Stippling FRN?

#1

Post by Officer Gigglez »

Can it be done? My understanding is that FRN is just polymer, which means it can be stippled just like, say, a polymer framed gun. Or am I incorrect?

Soldering Iron, hot knife. The same way I would do a poly gun. It seems to me that FRN would be different from polymer in some ways, but it is essentially the same. But I don't want to try it and end up ruining my FRN Spydie. But I may have to get a cheap Byrd with FRN and try it out.

Nylon IS a polymer just like every other plastic but the glass fibers may cause problems. However I would just try it on a Byrd.

FRN can definitely be melted. I've seen FRN folders handles with initials/names burned into them with a soldering iron. I'm fairly certain tonydahose has done that to at least one of the knives he uses for work. The only question would be whether it can be softened and deformed as neatly as the polymer used in Glocks.

If you do it post some pics. That is a neat idea.

What color?

It can be Dremeled and sanded. I've done a bit of that. Never tried stippling texture, though.

Here's an example of what I did. I removed some FRN to make the finger hole more accessible on the Native.

Image

It carved out a bit ragged, but sanded nicely.
- best wishes, Jazz.

It'd be black, mainly because if it does work like polymer, it'll burn. Black burns on black polymer doesn't show up, just the shape that is melted.

That is a very useful mod. for the beloved Native...one that I am sure to employ on my new LW Native 5 whenever they're available

Thanks for sharing!!! What implement / tool did you use for the rough shaping?

Also, when you got time put up some more upclose pics of your Native in the closed positon, if you don't mind :o

I have ground/rounded the back underside of the trigger guard on a bunch of Glocks to move the grip up a bit, and once I got down to 320 grit or so, it polishes up real nice with cardboard! Just make a little tiny roll and scrub away. I guess that's the opposite of stippling...

The polymer (plastic) used for Glocks is Nylon also. It may be a slightly different formulation but it is generally similar material to FRN. I don't think the Glock nylon is reinforced with glass fibers though, and I'm pretty sure Glock frames are cast instead of injection molded.
