Been drooling over a Hinderer XM-18 wharnie lately...did a little searching around and just found one that sold on eBay for $999.99 :rolleyes:

I'm not saying I'd NEVER spend a grand on a knife, but by god it will have to be something ridiculous for that price, and as much as I like this knife and as much as I'm sure the build quality is top notch, it's S35VN, which for me just isn't worth a grand. For that kind of money it has to be a total package, and the steel is a big slice of the pie for me. Too bad, I love the rest of that knife design.

Ever thought of any of the new ZT's? I love the 0562 not a wharnie

I have, but I was specifically looking for wharnies. A lot of ZT's have either a recurve or up swept tip which I'm not into, and others are too "chunky" for my taste.

Yojimbo is hard to beat in the Wharnie department. I have not yet been able to justify a Hinderer to myself, never say never but I don't know that I ever will. I have and 0550, I will likely but an 0562 but that is probably as close as I will ever get.

I personally cannot justify buying a hinderer either
I have both the 0560 and the 0550 and they kind of do it for me.."close enough" for a fraction of the price.
Altho I will definitely get a 0562 just for the grind!

ZT to me are just exceptional value. I am not much for the half pound knives but I love all the Hinderer stuff. I like the new Emerson Collabs too.

Yea I used to think the ZT hinderer collab knives were heavy until I got the ZT/Strider/Ken Onion 0300 lol that thing is just way too heavy

I agree with your feelings David. I have lusted after the clean, simple lines of the TAD Dauntless MK1 for years, but the steel is a big deal for me and nothing really stands out about this knife when I compare it to the competition. The Hinderers are the exact same way. I passed on an X-18 in XHP a while back and that was a steal at $750.

I'm just glad his knives haven't done much for me. If David Rydbom does a semi-custom Griffin though I might faint :) .

Well you know the old saying "It's Worth What Someone Will Pay For It">> But I agree with you guys that a knife with those specs wouldn't get more than $300** tops out of me. But then again I'm not that big of a custom fan with the super quality that I could get with a Spyderco Southfork or Temp 2.

Now if it's an investment like buying a Moran, Jerry Fisk or Phil Boguszewski custom made blade and you're going to make a safe queen out of it until it's value grows then that's another story. To me that would be like buying a sound investment grade blue chip stock and holding it for 5 years or so and draw the dividends in the meantime.

But someone out there was willing to pay that much for it, there was one buyer who thought it was worth $1000** so to me the seller would have been a fool not to sell it. I sure hope for the buyer's sake that he gets a decent return from his investment.

Check out the prices on the Rassenti Integral Druid next time you are searching Evil. They are terrific looking little knives for more than the Hinderer (though they are actual customs not mid-techs)

If that didn't have such an extreme negative angle to the blade (though I understand the purpose), I would be all about that. That is a gorgeous design.

Have no fear... it is not in the locked position. The photo below should help rest your mind.

Man, you could have just let me live in ignorance. The way the handle lined up with the blade in the first pic looked a lot like it was designed that way. I've seen some self defense blades designed with negative angles like that. I didn't notice the tang could be seen through the lock cutout.

The Druid is one of my Grail Knives ever. Waaay Over anything Hinderer would ever be.

But AFAIK, Rassenti closed his books long time ago, and the worst part is that it's not even clear if he would ever do another Druid again.

Indeed! That's one twisted little movie. Natalie Portman really burned up the screen as a lolita (she was what... 12?). And Gary Oldman was downright disturbing.
