Some time ago I made myself a tanto (from scrap steel). I abused it in many ways, from work in the garden, knife throwing and and as a beater knife in the woods. It worked satisfactory but the blade snapped in two eventually... :o I still think a tanto knife could be a good choice for outdoors.

I have a few tantos from Emerson and like them a lot. They actually do function quite well for regular, everyday cutting tasks. They're great slicers or stabbers.
