Straight Razors

#1

Post by cdf »

I'm thinking of getting one , any care and feeding thoughts ? I have an SM , several Japanese water stones + a lapping plate , and a bevy of strops . One of my strops is a hanging strop , the others are paddle type .

Anyone think ultrafine rods used in the grooves on the Sharpmaker's base would work for honing ? I also have an 8000grit ceramic stone , allbeit a short one .

UF rods will work fine- but you will need to polish that edge on the strops ... btw, what strops do you have.

If you can manage to polish up the edge on the small 8k ceramic stone, you should be fine, but again, strop

I used a straight for years. Got okay at it but required more focus than I want to spend on shaving :) especially if I'm in a hurry.... Sold most of them but still have a few of my favorites around, you know, just in case ;)

As to maintanence, the best thing I found was those pressure sensitive diamond lapping films. Stick them to something very flat (glass works well) and use a stropping stroke. It's all you should need besides a daily strop.

(IMO - get a carbon steel blade - you'll get a MUCH better edge)

I don't think Lee Valley actually makes them, but they carry them. Most seem to be made by 3M or PSI, maybe some others?

Here is some info as well....

I'm a bit of a Lee Valley junkie , and there is one in my hood .

Stropwise , I have a bunch of paddle strops ( do a bit of woodwork and leatherwork ) , I also have a hanging strop ( leather loaded with green chrome , back side linen with chalk . If I can find some old canvas hose , or really thick felt , I'll give those a try .

I also use diamond paste on MDF offcuts - kinda like disposable hones .

TKS,

I got into it a little while ago but find I like the feel of a Feather Artist Club SS. Got most of my info at Badger & Blade, great group of guys and everyone always seems to be selling exactly what I need. Good luck!

Ken, that's why I try and stay away from there as much as possible :) it's like here, only the prices are a lot easier on the eyes and wallet so I end up spending just as much!
