What is wrong with lyrics today....

#1

Post by psimonl »

I now have a teeanger at home and I am really wondering about the lyrics of the songs she is listening to.

-"I have a hangover... must drink to feel better"
-"My jeans were worn by a star"
-"You are my dream, leave my and I'll kill me"

Being french, she doesn't understand, but wow....

I wonder about parents whos children actually understand what the songs are about.

Remember our times were songs were about protests and society...

Simon
"Everyday above the ground and vertical is a good day".
-Sir A. Hopkins in "The world's Fastest Indian"

"If it hurts, it means you're not dead..."
-Kayakist Marie-Pier Cote

Usually it's just made-up words I have to search for on Urbandictionary.

If I'm not mistaken, there were plenty of songs in the 60's and 70's written about drugs.. not to mention those bands and singers were users. A lot of it is interpretation.. I will say modern music has definitely changed. There's good music out there.. you just have to find it.

Still, stupidity is everywhere. It's just more out in the open thanks to the internet, youtube and facebook... entertainers target those "special" crowds.

Sad, but true. Seems like an almost de-evolution in progress.

I'm pretty sure current generations always look down on future ones. Anyways, I plead the fifth. Love Eminem. Some of his rhymes are kinda clever though.

"I've been through the wringer, but they can do little to the middle finger." (3 fingers here, ring, little, and middle.)

"and love is evil, spell it backwards, I'll show ya." Many interpretations... to love is to live, or love is "evol".

Many of the older songs were clever and the meaning was different than what
the layman would think. Such as Puff the magic dragaon, Lucy in the sky with
diamonds, American Woman etc.
I remember someone that I used to work with was a huge Beatles fan and hated
Guns and Roses when they first came out with Apetite for Destruction in the late 80's.
She went on and on about how clean the Beatles words were with no drug references
and so on. I hated to do it, but I had to explain that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
was about an LSD trip, Lucy=L, Sky=S, Diamonds=D.

There are countless others. Song writing seemed to be an art at one time when the
true meanings were hidden.

There were a lot of dirty lyrics in the old songs too...

But I'll agree that lyric writing has really taken the back seat to profits.

If people who cared about lyrics were buying music, then maybe there would be lyrics worth listening to.

I listen to some heavy music, and the lyrics are all pretty crazy. Something i've thought a lot about is why exactly does society take music lyrics so **** serious, yet we can watch a horror movie about a guy killing people with a chainsaw and nobody takes it serious at all and if you watch a horror movie people don't treat you like a social outcast like they do if you listen to "death metal". I saw an interview once of George Fisher (singer for the band Cannibal Corpse) and he basically said this music is not serious at all, take it as a horror movie in music form...and when you think of it along those terms, it makes much more sense. Somewhere along the line people started taking music lyrics so seriously and i just don't understand why. Not everything is deep with meaning. I listen to heavy music for the music, but there are a few bands who's lyrics are cool or worth paying attention to. The best part is my 9 year old has no idea what they're saying anyway lol.

I'm not old enough to remark on how kids viewed things 30 years ago in regards to the music they listened to, but I can tell you, as a teacher, part of the reason for the strong dissapproval of lyrics today is how much kids emulate them. You wouldn't believe some of the things I hear come out of an eight year old's mouth. There is a deeper understanding today of things that kids shouldn't know anything about, and part of it is tied to the music they listen to (and the videos that are connected to that music) and what is constantly being told/shown to them is "cool," "normal," and "right."

was a time it took real talent to rise to the top-little by little talent has been replaced by marketing-that and rap music killed american youth-find a rap group that has a honest to goodness musician not a guy who runs a computer board-

still a few good new ones around like jack johnson and dave mathews
