Levon Helm ......and The Band
That's a great find "EXTRA" :) Very few people know that tune was on the flip side of their hit on 45rpm disc of their super hit "Up On Cripple Creek"

Also I loved their version of "TheWeight that they did in the Easy Rider movie. And what a name " The BAND"

But I will be a kill-joy to a large degree because I still think that the version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" done by super lady Joan Baez in the fall of 1971 was the very best version of that song.
The video is from Martin Scorsese "The Last Waltz" documentary of the Bands last concert... Epic to say the least !

I didn’t know that about Joan Baez. ..thanks for the tip JD.

James,
You've might have already checked it out, but here is Joan Baez's version. I share Joe's opinion that it's the best version of this song. It's the version I always heard on the radio:

Thanks for the link Jim! My dad was a big Joan Baez fan and I realize after hearing her sing Robbie Robertsons masterpiece. ...I've heard this version before. Awesome to say the least!

Here's another favorite scene /song from the Last Waltz. Neil Young singing "Helpless " with The Band and Joni Mitchell providing angelic background vocals behind the stage. https://youtu.be/FPtvpjBEEqo

James

It's been said that Neil Young had a huge glob of coke stuck in his nose during this performance. They had to blend it away during final editing

Again I wasn't trying to pop anyone's bubble at all. Because I actually did like a lot of the stuff done by "THE BAND". I grew up on the tune "Up On Cripple Creek" ( especially the long version).
It's been said many times that my other mother Janis Joplin was the First Lady of Rock>> well if that's really the case then sister Joan Baez is a close second. I just loved the stuff she did at WoodStock along with much of her stuff she did with Vanguard Records ( The Same label as Country Joe & The Fish). And her version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was a huge hit in 1971 on all the charts. She broke down a lot of barriers and had the guts to stand firm for what she believed even though I personally didn't agree with all that she protested. But a real person who stood up for what they believed none the less.

And don't forget the driving force that Joe Cocker was in the music industry. Because Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell along with Delaney & Bonnie among many others that all owe their careers to Mr. Cocker ( GOD Rest his soul).

Joe, I never got to that many concerts of any one group. The most was Blue Oyster Cult and that was three. My lifestyle precluded it. I left my hometown early to find work and mostly traveled until I joined the army. I was often nearly a hundred miles from the nearest city ( North Platte NE, Alliance NE ) which precluded concerts and such. Later as an adult I worked a few local concerts here as security.

COC

and such. Only when I was not at my regular state job.

I got to meet Rita Coolidge a few years ago. She was living in Fallbrook, CA at the time. She was very down-to-earth and seemed much younger than her 70 years.

"Octopussy" is nowhere near one of the best James Bond movies, but Rita's "All Time High" has long been my favorite Bond theme song:
