I wonder if he used a Spyderco..

"DENVER (Reuters) - A western Colorado logger said on Wednesday that he amputated all the toes on his right foot with a pocket knife to free himself after a 7-ton trailer landed on his foot, trapping him in an isolated forest."

As a logger, I can say the scariest thing is having something happen to you when you are DEEP in the woods with no one around. Considering the average chain saw injury requires 110 stitches, yeah, its not a very safe job. Runnin saws sure is fun though!

I seen that last night on the news, and the fist thing I thought was, "what knife did he use?".

30 minutes seems kinda quick. I guess he knew that waiting for help was pointless. Wouldn't a SE be better for cutting through bones?

I'd say if his foot was so stuck that he had to cut his toes off, then he was probably going to lose his toes in the end anyway, they were probably crushed. He was also probably in so much pain that cutting them off didn't hurt any worse, but i guess only he can say. I caught a small piece of this on the news, i think it was a SAK.

:eek: holy crap, that would be awful! I'd much prefer a RAZOR sharp Millie for when i cut off my appendages! I might have even used a Husqvarna, would have been a **** of a lot faster (although messy)...

Note to self, always carry a bolt cutter if you're gonna be a logger so you can just snip your toes off the easy way

or a cigar cutter, they use those alot in the movies :p

that is of course if you don't have fred flintstone feet and your toes won't fit into said cigar cutter :D

See, next time carry a knife with some proper snob steel that has better edge retention than a SAK :D

This whole story needs to be added to that other thread "why do you need a knife"....because cutting your toes off is a lot easier than dying a slow death stuck under a trailer in the wilderness.

I guess his chainsaw was out of reach. lol

personally, I would have started with the big 'uns.

Actually I cant imagine doing this... If he was somewhere there was a trailer, I think I would have waited longer than 30 minutes... If he was on an active timber job site, it would usually be a max of two days before someone came back there, and most likely less than that. Im just not sure what he would have been doing back there alone...

Yea... I'd try to wait until the end before I... *glup* amputate my own toes... with a knife... that'd hurt like crazy... and then you still have to walk back... I wonder what they did with the toes though...

In case anyone cares the knife was an old carbon steel Schrade Old Timer Trapper. I think a model 94OT.

Always carry a knife and keep it sharp. You never know what's next.
( They found the toes but they were not able to reattach them.)

I was just thinking the same thing :D Couldn't imagine doing that but I guess if that was the only choice then "It was nice knowing you toes".

But I have to give this guy top award for self appendage removal.
