Large Knife Lovers

#1

Post by Dr. Snubnose »

I have been switching between the Rock Salt, CRKT, Hissatsu and a custom double edge rather large knife designed by a friend and forum member here for my EDC primary. I'm a lover of large knives...who else is a lover of large knives...what kinda of big knives do you carry...Lets see some pics...Doc :D

Both are too big for carry in Texas. Pity. :(

I carry a Police3 often. Does that count? :o I usually carry folders and a mule. I love large folders. Fixed blades don't suit my EDC needs though, unless I am going into the woods.

I've been carrying the Digi daily and love it! It didn't take me long to get used to a large folder, even though I do carry a smaller secondary blade also. For now, the Orange Millie is a safe queen... and may stay that way since I have both.

So, if I carry a Cricket daily... You wouldn't consider that large? :P

Doc, I've heard that the Hissatsu is not very sharp or has poor edge geometry. Can you provide an opinion on its cutting capacity? I'd love a good reason to invest in one, as the design is compelling.

The largest knife I have carried with any regularity is my modified CS XXL Voyager. While trail hiking, I have carried both a Bushman and a Spyderco Temperance 2. The Temp is definitely my fave, by far. I own a stag-handled CS Trailmaster, but it's not very practical--except for impressing friends and prosaic work in the kitchen.

I could see why people would think that...but It's not the case at all...It can be very sharp and did extremely well in my meat testing and pretty much thrusts through any material you can put in front of it. It is a tool basically for one thing and it excels at that one thing....Doc :D

I think the main problem people had with the Hissatsu was the cheap looking plastic handle and "inferior" blade steel.
I think they were just fans of traditional japanese designs and felt the Hissatsu raped the traditional tanto. As if a certain other manufacturer hadn't already done that. :D

BTW Doc: Whats your take on the Hisshou and the upcoming Shinbu (smaller version)? :D

The Hisshou is a little large for carrying concealed...I haven't seen or handled the Shinbu as of yet so I can't comment....Blade steel on the Hissatsu is not bad at all, yes I'd love it in better steel, but that being said it holds a sharp edge...as long as you know what to do when sharpening...if you can't sharpen a blade, then you will screw up the edge...Handle is pretty secure in the hand for the rubberized feel, it's not a traditional wrap, but then again it's not custom pricing either...All in all I like the handle...Doc :D

The hissatsu wasn't designed to be a slicer. I used to frequent Bugei's sword forum, and they were quite clear that it is designed as a penetrator more than a slasher. It is big enough to slash, but it's mainly made to penetrate armor.

Large for me is starting above 4"

Police 3
Camillus cuda maxx 5.5 ( D2)
Cold Steel Voyager 5"
SOG Pentagon and SOG elite 2 5"
Benchmade Skirmish
Lone Wolf T3 ( sheath only)
Ontario Retribution 1 ( sheath only)

The Rukus amongst some others is in my collection but I never carry it due to quirks or poor ergos. Likewise, the Ti 6 inch cold steel. I have them but they aren't getting any use.

The P3 is my favorite for carrying. The Cuda Maxx and Lone Wolf I hope to never have to get rid of though they aren't always the first knives I grab. The Retribution 1 is a work of art. Amazing!
