can opener....

#1

Post by psimonl »

Hello to you all...

I don't write as often as I used to.... Work, family and tiredness all around ... Oh, and getting into my 40's....

Anyway,

I wanted your opinions on can opener. When I was youg, We had a can opener that lasted 10 years or so ...

Now, I don't know what happenned, but my c.o.'s last less than 2 months....

I guess canning companies use less metal so the edge is thinner... And can opener companies didn't adjust..

I tried KitchenAid, Swing-A-Long, Dollar Store, Italian imports....

Always within 2 months they break...

I don't want electric... I want a store away hand held manual can opener that is trusty, wont break my windows (I threw one and....500.00$:rolleyes :)

Any suggestions?

Take care and glad you are all there when I need a nice home to relax...

You guys must open a lot of cans. I think the one i have in the kitchen is a cheapo Walmart job and i've had it for longer than i can remember. Probably 11 years or more, since i got out on my own at least.

Hehehe, well not quite two months but I find that my can openers last a heckuva lot less than the ones we had when I was a kid.

I just did about 20 minutes of reading about can openers, people seem to have good luck with an OXO brand can opener.

We use an old manual opener. Squeeze-type with the turn crank on the side. Had it since before I got married, and that was 12yrs ago, so I'd say it has held up well. Cost was maybe $3-5 at Walmart I imagine? I open a LOT of cans too, so it has been well used over the years.

I use one of these guys and love it to death.

The lids go right back on the cans as well.

Kuhn Rikon, Swiss, stainless.

Small, simple, robust, capable, leaves dull edges (a kindness for recyclers, you know who you are) and lid won't fit/fall into opened can.

Bot @ a specialty kitchen store years ago and used mercilessly, without complaint, ever since.

We have one and it's lasted as long as we've been married. So we'll see which lasts longer. :p [duck]

Zyliss make good kitchen products and have some nice can openers which will not break the bank. They are also backed up by a 5 year warranty (at least) which covers manufactorer's defects.

Personally I love the lock n lift can opener cause you do not need to squeeze it. It works well for older people or those with arthritis and have problems squeezing.

Swear by my OXOs and swear AT everything else. ;)

Have had 2 for 5 years. The sine qua non for cans!! Cleaved the crowns from countless clusters of hermetically sealed Stannum clad carbon-ferrite closed cylindrical containers without contrary complications.

Yes! My wife and I had an OXO until she insisted on an electric. We cook pretty much every night, often with ingredients from cans. The OXO lasted us more than four years with no issues. When we got the electric, I donated the manual to neighbors; otherwise I'd offer to donate it to you!

Well thank you....

Here, they are a little bit on the expensive side (25.00$) But I soo tired of crapiness.... I'll go with the OXO smooth edge!!!

Thank you for the offer, Gibsoniam. Very appreciated.

Good idea, golddot370, but when you're cooking, you don't want to put your oily hands in a pant's pocket!!!

Thank you all for resolving my problem.
